Abstract(s)
This study aims to assess the economic impact of the main sporting events that take place in a small coastal municipality in Portugal. Sporting events have long been one of the world's biggest tourist attractions. Many places, cities and countries seek to develop these initiatives as a way of boosting their economies by recovering abandoned spaces, creating new centralities and increasing employment and public and private revenue through investments from these two administrative spheres. Peniche is a small peninsula city in the west of Portugal, where dozens of sporting events take place, including the WSL (World Surf League) World Tour, the only one on the European continent. The economic impacts can be direct, indirect and induced. The direct ones are the most obvious and objective. The others are always estimated. Given that estimation models can take different forms and lead to different conclusions, the true total impact of these events is always open to question. In order to avoid estimation errors, which often lead to an overestimation of the results, we opted to calculate only the Direct Economic Impacts, from the point of view of those who objectively feel the effects on their businesses, the entrepreneurs. We found that in a small coastal municipality, where many sporting initiatives are promoted, mostly on a small scale, the direct economic impacts of the sporting events were very low, although of great identity importance.
