Abstract(s)
The search for European sea cucumbers has been on the rise. Holothuria arguinensis is a promising species for aquaculture production. The main goal of this study is contributing to the optimization of Holothuria arguinensis production, mainly its growth and living conditions in captivity. To optimize its growth a nutritional trial was performed which consisted in the administration of three diets based on macroalgae enriched substrates, namely: Sargassum vulgare (control), Ulva lactuca e Porphyra dioica. The Sargassum vulgare treatment demonstrated to be promising, achieving much higher results in weight and growth when compared with the other treatments. To evaluate the condition and effect of the adaptability of Holothuria arguinensis adults an analysis was performed to its immune system. The celomic liquid was retrieved from individuals from different environments (wild and captivity), used in cellular counting and analysis to its immune parameters. This study covers the first attempt at this theme and showed to be promising. The achieved results showed an apparent loss in condition in the individuals from captivity, nevertheless, further research must be made to back said statement. These trials constituted in the improvement of the species production and domestication, further research in these areas is essential to improve its success rate in captivity.
