Abstract(s)
fundamentais.
Assuming that religion has a strong geographical component, the present article seeks to add to the contemporary debate of geography the interest in the study of religious communities and sacred places, important elements for the knowledge and perception of the territory in its multiple dimensions and scales. The study aimed to meet two fundamental objectives. First, briefly describe the evolution of religious identities in the Portuguese context and in the municipality of Coimbra (percentage of population integrated in the different religious groups), including the approach to some factors that are drivers of change. Second, to analyze different types of Catholic community, defined based on the sociodemographic characteristics of the population, but also on the respective life paths and religious paths. These different commu nities give rise to different territorialities, different networks of belonging sacred places, at local, national and international level.
