Abstract(s)
Anxiety is a prevalent mental health problem that significantly affects individuals' wellbeing and daily functioning. It is estimated that around 264 million people worldwide suffer from the effects of anxiety, including Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) (Barnhill, J. 2023). John Barnhill (2023) analyses the physiological manifestations of anxiety, and the neurotransmitter imbalances involved, highlighting the complex interaction between hormonal regulation, neurotransmission and emotional well-being. Anxiety is a normal emotion, experienced by everyone in stressful situations. However, when it manifests itself excessively and persistently, interfering with daily life, it can be an indication of an anxiety disorder (Ye et al., 2021). Anxiety is associated with various comorbidities, including depression. There is a high prevalence of anxiety disorders worldwide, and it is important to have comprehensive approaches to promote mental health literacy. In fact, a low level of mental health literacy is considered one of the factors contributing to social exclusion and increased morbidity and mortality (Mancuso, J. 2008). With the arrival of the pandemic, there has been an increase in cases of depression. A study carried out during this period by the Institute of Public Health at the University of Porto revealed that a third of the Portuguese in the sample of 926 people suffered or had suffered from symptoms of anxiety and depression (Aguiar et al., 2022). Considering the multifaceted nature of anxiety disorders, this dissertation proposal explores how design, as a creative and strategic tool, can contribute to raising awareness about the importance of early detection, developing effective treatment strategies and understanding the impact of social stigmas on individuals with mental health problems. In this context, the dissertation also seeks to question the role of design as a strategic tool for critical thinking in the early detection and management of anxiety symptoms, focusing on the intersection between mental health and user experience design. The main aim is to identify approaches that can reduce the stigma associated with discussing mental health, particularly anxiety. In addition, it aims to analyses case studies to understand how to respond to these challenges and structure effective support networks.
