The present Master’s Degree in Community Health Nursing, in the area of Family Health Nursing, was developed through a structured training pathway that integrated both a theoretical component and a clinical practice component, in accordance with Regulation n.o 428/2018, (2018). The theoretical component enabled an in-depth understanding of the models and fundamental theories that underpin the practice of family health nursing, contributing to the development of critical thinking, evidence-based decision-making, and the provision of care grounded in scientific evidence. The practical component made it possible to apply and consolidate the knowledge acquired, fostering the development of specialised competencies centred on the family as a unit of care. This experience strengthened the ability to establish therapeutic relationships based on empathy, effective communication, and respect for individuality, promoting trust and the implementation of health interventions tailored to the needs of individuals and families. The clinical context enabled the development of competencies in conducting structured family interviews, planning and implementing educational interventions, and using tools that support health literacy, thereby contributing to family empowerment and improved adaptation processes. Additionally, integration within a multidisciplinary team supported the development of collaborative competencies, particularly in interprofessional coordination, continuity of care, and participation in quality improvement processes. This environment provided a detailed understanding of the role of the family nurse in care coordination and in responding to the complex needs of families. As part of the training pathway, the development of the research project strengthened competencies in critical analysis, research methodology, and the application of scientific evidence to clinical practice. The study focused on parental knowledge of child development, highlighting the importance of paternal involvement in developmental surveillance, the need for strategies that promote their participation in care, and the central role of the family nurse. In summary, this pathway enabled the integrated development of technical, scientific, and relational competencies essential to the practice of the Family Health Nurse Specialist, establishing a solid foundation for future professional development.
