Abstract(s)
Travel and tourism is one of the biggest industries in the world and accounts for more than 10% of the global GDP. Such a big industry impacts the world in many different ways: economically, socially, culturally, and environmentally. Recent concerns regarding the sustainability of tourism growth, together with the presence of more environmentally conscious travellers led to a transition in the industry. This report has the objective of reporting the impact of sustainability challenges in the hotel industry together with experiences and knowledge acquired during my internship. Thanks to an exhaustive literal review it has been possible to pictures how the industry is acting in response to sustainability needs, in particular the country of the internship, Mexico. On the other hand, the internship provided the opportunity to record the main challenges, learning opportunities and personal reflections that help to have a practical example on how sustainability can be applied by participating to the obtention of the Green Key Certification. The results picture a tourism industry that is making steps ahead in terms of sustainability initiatives, both for a deep compromise with the environment, an economic return in the medium-long term, and a marketing strategy to attract an always increasing demand for sustainable tourism. The cross-training formula of my internship allowed a comprehensive understanding of the three pillars of sustainability; economic, social, and environmental together with a holistic approach to the hotel operations.
