Abstract(s)
Specialist nurses are expected to have common and specific skills to provide effective personcentred responses. The various skills have a cognitive, affective and functional dimension and must integrate a theoretical, practical and experimental component and be developed in an academic and clinical context. This report will be presented and defended in order to obtain a Master's degree in MedicalSurgical Nursing, specialized in Nursing for People in Critical Situations (PCS), with the purposes of: i) highlighting the common and specific skills of the nurse specialized in the area of care for the PCS developed in an academic and clinical environment, through a criticalreflective methodology; ii) demonstrating research competences through the description of a descriptive-observational study developed in an emergency context, and which will be presented in article format. The clinical contexts referred to in purpose one was carried out in the context of medical-surgical emergency services, out-of-hospital services and intensive care services. With regard to the research work referred to in purpose two and entitled: ‘Nurse Communication in Emergency Services: Challenges in Caring for People/Families with Palliative Needs’, it arose from the recognition of the importance of the theme, since the current reality has shown an increasing number of palliative patients and those with chronic pathologies attending emergency services dedicated to critically/acutely ill patients. Therefore, health professionals have been facing the need to apply skills in order to respond to this reality on a daily basis, specifically using appropriate communication, which is considered one of the four pillars of palliative care. This report will be divided into two parts. Part I will respond to the first objective and part II to the second objective.
