ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS : This work was financially supported by FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) through project ‘Jellyfisheries—Towards an integrated approach to enhance predictive accuracy of the jellyfish impact on coastal marine ecosystems’ (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016772) and the Integrated Programme of SR&TD ‘SmartBioR—Smart Valorization of Endogenous Marine Biological Resources Under a Changing Climate’ (Centro-01-0145-FEDER-000018), co-funded by Centro 2020 program, Portugal 2020, European Union, through the European Regional Development Fund. Inês Duarte acknowledges FCT by financially supporting her PhD grant (SFRH/BD/146449/2019). Thanks for financial support are also due to CESAM (UIDB/50017/2020 + UIDP/50017/2020) and MARE (UIDB/04292/2020 + UIDP/04292/2020), to FCT/MEC through national funds, and the cofounding by the FEDER, within the PT2020 Partnership Agreement and Compete 2020. We also thank Carlos Estevão Simonka for his prized help and guidance on microscope photography of living organisms and for the professional edition of the photos depicted in Figure 2.pt_PT
Interest on jellyfish research has significantly increased over the last two decades, mostly driven by the potential benefits of their high-end uses. Recent efforts have been put forward towards the commercial use of scyphozoan jellyfish, although the pipeline leading to their full exploitation is still at an early stage of development. Indeed, further research and several technical advances are still required to expand the use of these bioresources to a larger and more sustainable scale. Here, we describe the state of the art of culture systems already available to farm these organisms throughout the different stages of their life cycle and provide an overview of the potential applications of jellyfish aquaculture for food, feed, as source of bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical and other biotechnological applications, as well as to supply the marine aquarium trade. Overall, this work aims to raise awareness on the relevance that jellyfish will likely play on the development of sustainable blue bioeconomy frameworks fostering a sustainable valorisation of marine living resources.pt_PT
