  • Comprehensive review on full bone regeneration through 3D printing approaches
Publication . Fernandes, Cristiana; Moura, Carla; Ascenso, Rita M.T.; Amado, Sandra; Alves, Nuno; Pascoal-Faria, Paula
Over the last decades, the number of work accidents associated with bone fractures has increased leading to a growing concern worldwide. Currently, autografts, allografts, and xenografts are used for bone regeneration. However, their application has associated risks. Tissue engineering (TE) has brought solutions to address these problems, through the production of temporary supports, providing mechanical support to the formation of new bone tissue and biocompatible and biodegradable scaffolds, which allow cell adhesion and proliferation to ensure bone formation. The combination of materials and structure with the technique to be used will directly influence their physical and chemical properties and, consequently, their action in contributing to bone regeneration. Thus, the focus of this chapter is to perform an exhaustive literature review and a critical analysis of the state of the art in bone TE and present a proposal of an optimized temporary support geometry for bone regeneration in case of large bone defects. For this, it was listed and identified the best choice of biomaterials, fabrication method, cell type and their culture conditions (static vs. dynamic), and/or the inclusion of growth factors for the repair of large bone defects.

  • AR Mobile Application to Enhance the Birdwatching Experience
Publication . Venâncio, José; Marto, Anabela; Ascenso, Rita Margarida Teixeira; Rodrigues, Nuno; Gonçalves, Alexandrino José Marques
Guard@Lis application was developed to ease the birdwatching activity. The main purpose was to support the discovery and identification of bird species along a trail, encouraging the preservation and protection of nature. To create a new bird observation perspective since augmented reality features were developed to enhance the experience of birdwatching, ensuring the chance to watch even the most elusive birds. Adding animated 3D models of some birds allows the observation of these species that, for several reasons, may not be easy to encounter in their natural habitat when the user is making the trail. The solution is composed of a multiplatform app and a back-office. It is prepared to create routes with hotspots and improve the bird species list. This first version was designed with a route in the city of Leiria, having specific points along the way, defined for the observation of certain species. Guard@Lis application intends to encourage the didactic and educational facets, so the whole development process of this application was to create a guide that allows users to be able to identify and list the number of bird species found. At this stage, the app allows its users to trail the main historical and tourist points of Leiria and collect the bird species observed.
  • Advanced technologies for shoe sole production
Publication . Spahiu, Tatjana; Almeida, Henrique; Ascenso, Rita M. T.; Vitorino, Liliana; Marto, Anabela
Advanced technologies for modelling and production are an important part in the whole process of product manufacturing. These advancements have changed the way of product development and play an important role in customization. In the footwear industry, as in any other industry, the use of these technologies is widely spread. Footwear comfort is one of the main selection criteria for purchase. Considering this fact, a case study of different steps for shoe designing according to individual foot shape will be presented. Taking into consideration the aesthetics of the sole and in a more sustainable view, through topological optimization reducing of material wastage for sole production will be presented. By means of the topological optimization in the shoe design process, sole optimization is realized. As a part of personalization, feet’s plantar pressure maps taken from 1 participant gave a better explanation of weight distribution of each foot. Following, sole personalization according the plantar pressure maps for each foot gives the possibility to obtain the best least material design according to the feet’s pressure while maintaining biomechanical performance.
  • How Health Literacy impacts Polytechnic of Leiria Students?
Publication . Teixeira Ascenso, Rita Margarida; Luis, Luis; Dias, Sara; Gonçalves, Dulce
In 2021, aHealth Literacy(HL) evaluation among university students revealed notable limitations in HL. To assess the general HL of populations comprehensively, the European HLSurvey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q) was developed, encompassing 12 subdomains to provide a broad perspective on public health. In 2014, the questionnaire was adapted for use in Portugal, resulting in the HLS-EU-PT version, validated through a 16-question survey (HLS-EU-PT-Q16).Global HL andthreedomains’ indexes and levelswere determined, namely Healthcare (HC), Disease prevention (DP), and Health Promotion (HP). The HLSEU-Q16-PT assessment demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency, with 0.8834Cronbach's alpha coefficient. In this study, an online survey distributedbetween 2020-2021among Polytechnic of Leiria academia allowed data collection from various stakeholders, including 251 students, 109 professors, 15 researchers, and 55 other staff. From the430 responses,75 questions were analysed. The saved data wasthefocus of this work, regarding a thesis of the first edition of the master’s in data science to analysethe 251 surveyed studentsand their HL. The results revealed that thesestudents have lower HL index, and, in this case study, health areadegreeor school impactsHL.
  • Energy systems models for efficiency towards Smart Cities
Publication . Galvao, Joao R.; Moreira, Licinio M.; Teixeira Ascenso, Rita Margarida; Leitao, Sergio A.
The way of energy use in the European Union (EU) needs to be improved by continuous promotion of sustainability and an efficient manner to ensure citizens' quality of life. This work presents two new energy models: i) retrofit of the present energy system in a public library building; ii) improving energy efficiency in public lighting using new technological solution Light Emission Diode (LED), new methods of control and management while leveraging the use of renewable energy as power supply. Both can act as a vehicle to disseminate concepts of Smart City (SC) and Internet of Things (IoT), also, as the development of energy production based on renewable energies: biomass and sunlight. With these two proposals it is intended to improve energy efficiency behaviours reducing energy waste, making use of the latest techniques and equipment, which promote more efficient management. This will lead to an effective reduction of energy consumption associated with public lighting while maintaining recommended levels of luminance in different situations. Finally this research is also to complete, a long-term goal of the EU, which is to develop a society that better uses their energy systems and, in Portugal, increase the use of available renewable energy sources.
