- Modeling Airborne Clean Energy SystemsPublication . Pereira, Tiago Romeiro Marques; Galvão, João Rafael da Costa Sanches; Faria, Paula Cristina Rodrigues Pascoal; Mateus, Artur Jorge dos SantosBatteries are increasingly becoming an essential element on the management and storage of electrical energy leading to multiple applications, such as, electrical vehicles and microgrids. This project will focus on the thermal behaviour of a battery to be used on mobile aerial systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), requiring low weight and high-capacity components. A battery’s temperature must be properly managed for a safe and efficient operation. As a result, several battery thermal management systems have been developed with distinct methodologies, applications, and degrees of efficiency. This project aims at developing several different models of heatsinks based on passive cooling, focusing on cooling a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle battery, and on the use of topology optimization and selective laser melting for its manufacture. Topology optimization will be coupled with computational thermal analysis to reduce the mass of the heatsink whilst ensuring a maximum battery temperature threshold. Along the use of topology optimization, the selective laser melting (SLM) process has been selected to manufacture the heatsinks for its geometrical freedom and ability to process highly thermal conductive metal alloys, such as aluminium and cooper alloys. Following the optimization of the heatsinks the models are validated through a transient thermal analysis. The results of the validation step are compared with those from the thermal performance of the battery system without a battery thermal management system. It resulted in heatsink models with branch like structures, and reduced weight and volume compared to the initial design space available, around a 75% reduction on average. It also moderately increased the amount of time the battery can work continuously within a safe temperature range (with an increase between 48 and 120%). These results indicate that a proper battery thermal management system allows for longer operation while increasing longevity and safer operating temperatures, broadening the capabilities of a battery system, and enabling innovative designs.
- Festival Caldas Anima. Festival de Animação de Rua. Produção, investigação e proposta de estratégia de comunicaçãoPublication . Miguel, Catarina Fonseca; Afonso, Lígia Filipa DiasO presente relatório consiste num trabalho de investigação sobre o Festival Caldas Anima, um festival de animação de rua inserido na programação do Centro Cultural e de Congressos das Caldas da Rainha (CCC), local onde se realizou o estágio curricular integrado no plano de estudos do Mestrado de Gestão Cultural na ESAD.cr/IPL. O interesse de pesquisa pelo festival Caldas Anima surgiu da constatação da falta de informação existente disponível online relativa ao seu histórico de programação e do desconhecimento do público sobre o evento. O objetivo do trabalho passa por apresentar uma investigação do festival em todas as suas edições e a análise, em benchmarking, de estudos de casos de eventos nacionais e internacionais congéneres, com o fim de propor uma melhor estratégia de comunicação mais eficaz para o evento, contemplando nomeadamente a sugestão da criação de um sítio web que incorpore o arquivo analisado e os contributos gerados.
- Assessment of the Seismic Behavior of a Precast Reinforced Concrete Industrial Building with the Presence of Horizontal Cladding PanelsPublication . Fernandes, PauloThe latest earthquakes in Europe exposed some critical problems in the connections of cladding panels in industrial precast reinforced concrete (PRC) structures. These connections did not perform as desired, causing the panels to fall, leading to significant nonstructural damage that resulted in the loss of human life and significant socio-economic impacts due to the interruption of business. Furthermore, in addition to the behavior of the cladding system itself, it is still not clear to what extent it can influence the overall seismic performance of the main structure. Making use of a simplified macroelement, the present study assesses the seismic performance of commonly employed cladding-to-structure connections, as well as the interaction of cladding panels with industrial PRC buildings. The analyses were carried out considering a PRC building representative of a Portuguese industrial park, studied with and without cladding panels. The seismic behavior of the structure was assessed considering both nonlinear static and dynamic procedures.
- Turismo Cinematográfico Remoto: aplicação prática no contexto portuguêsPublication . Neves, Isa Mara Mendes; Almeida, Nuno Miguel CastanheiraO presente trabalho de projeto foi dividido em duas partes. A primeira parte apresenta um estudo sobre turismo cinematográfico pretendendo avaliar o impacto dos filmes na atratividade dos destinos turísticos, nomeadamente na intenção de visita dos espectadores, dando origem à pergunta de partida: Qual o filme/país que desperta maior interesse nos visitantes e poderá posteriormente ser apresentado como exemplo a usar na conceção do projeto? Para a realização deste estudo foram selecionados dois destinos representados em três sagas do género fantasia com grande êxito e legião de fãs: Reino Unido e os filmes Harry Potter e a Nova Zelândia e as sagas O Senhor dos Anéis e O Hobbit, onde os participantes tiveram oportunidade de visualizar dois vídeos promocionais (um para cada destino/saga) selecionados previamente. Os instrumentos utilizados para a recolha de dados foi um estudo EEG (eletroencefalografia) onde foram analisadas seis variáveis (envolvimento, stresse, interesse, foco, entusiasmo e relaxamento), um questionário e um inquérito. A amostra do estudo foi constituída por um total de quinze indivíduos. Os resultados demonstraram que existe uma relação forte entre todas as variáveis e o destino elegido para uma experiência turística remota foi a Nova Zelândia e as sagas O Senhor dos Anéis e O Hobbit. Uma vez dada resposta à pergunta de partida entramos na segunda parte: a aplicação prática no contexto português da experiência turística remota. Para esse efeito é feito um roteiro, assim como uma descrição detalhada dos recursos necessários à implementação da mesma. Por último, é apresentado um plano de marketing e todas as fases inerentes ao mesmo.
- SAR.IoT: Secured Augmented Reality for IoT Devices ManagementPublication . Fuentes, Daniel; Correia, Luís; Costa, Nuno; Reis, Arsénio; Barroso, João; Pereira, AntónioCurrently, solutions based on the Internet of Things (IoT) concept are increasingly being adopted in several fields, namely, industry, agriculture, and home automation. The costs associated with this type of equipment is reasonably small, as IoT devices usually do not have output peripherals to display information about their status (e.g., a screen or a printer), although they may have informative LEDs, which is sometimes insufficient. For most IoT devices, the price of a minimalist display, to output and display the device’s running status (i.e., what the device is doing), might cost much more than the actual IoT device. Occasionally, it might become necessary to visualize the IoT device output, making it necessary to find solutions to show the hardware output information in real time, without requiring extra equipment, only what the administrator usually has with them. In order to solve the above, a technological solution that allows for the visualization of IoT device information in actual time, using augmented reality and a simple smartphone, was developed and analyzed. In addition, the system created integrates a security layer, at the level of AR, to secure the shown data from unwanted eyes. The results of the tests carried out allowed us to validate the operation of the solution when accessing the information of the IoT devices, verify the operation of the security layer in AR, analyze the interaction between smartphones, the platform, and the devices, and check which AR markers are most optimized for this use case. This work results in a secure augmented reality solution, which can be used with a simple smartphone, to monitor/manage IoT devices in industrial, laboratory or research environments.
