- Intracorporeal versus extracorporeal anastomosis in laparoscopic right colectomy: short-term outcomesPublication . Gil, Inês Campos; Rama, Nuno; Parente, Diana; Sales, Inês; Alves, Paulo; Clara, Paulo; Amado, Sandra; Coelho, Miguel; Faria, VítorBackground: Recently, there has been a growing enthusiasm in developing new techniques of intracorporeal anastomosis following laparoscopic colectomy, which are more challenging than extracorporeal techniques. However, the evidence is still lacking regarding the outcomes’ comparison of both procedures. Methods: We designed a retrospective study comparing intracorporeal and extracorporeal anastomosis following laparoscopic right colectomy. A total of 115 consecutive patients operated for right colon disease were identified, from September 1st 2014 to May 31st 2017. Patient demographics included age, gender, ASA score, past abdominal surgery, anticoagulant and steroid therapy, Diabetes Mellitus and preoperative diagnosis. The analysed outcomes included length of stay, operative time, blood loss, extraction site, postoperative complications (ileus, anastomotic failure and surgical site infection), reoperation rate, readmission rate and 30-day mortality. Results: The extracorporeal group included 84 and the intracorporeal group 31 patients. The intracorporeal group had less surgical site infections (3,2% versus 27,4%, p<0,05). There were no statistically significant differences in operative time, blood loss, ileus, anastomotic failure or mortality. Conclusion: Our study reveals similar outcomes for both intra- and extracorporeal anastomosis following laparoscopic right colectomy. Therefore, intracorporeal anastomosis seems to be a feasible and safe technique in the hands of experienced laparoscopic colorectal surgeons.

- Effects of bilateral discectomy and bilateral discopexy on black Merino sheep rumination kinematics: TEMPOJIMS – phase 1 – pilot blinded, randomized preclinical studyPublication . Ângelo, David; Gil, Florencio Monje; González-García, Raúl; Mónico, Lisete; Sousa, Rita; Neto, Lia; Caldeira, Inês; Moura, Carla; Francisco, Luís Carlos; Sanz, David; Alves, Nuno; Salvado, Francisco; Morouço, PedroBackground The temporomandibular joint interposal study (TEMPOJIMS) is a rigorous preclinical trial divided in 2 phases. In phase 1 the authors investigated the role of the TMJ disc and in phase 2 the authors evaluated 3 different interposal materials. The present work of TEMPOJIMS - phase 1, investigated the effects of bilateral discectomy and discopexy in sheep mastication and rumination. Methods This randomized, blinded and controlled preclinical trial (in line with the ARRIVE guidelines) was conducted in 9 Black Merino sheep to evaluate changes in mastication and rumination after bilateral discectomy and bilateral discopexy, by comparing with a sham surgery control group. The outcomes evaluated were: (1) absolute masticatory time; (2) ruminant time per cycle; (3) ruminant kinematics, and (4) ruminant area. After baseline evaluation and surgical interventions, the outcomes were recorded over 3 successive days, every 30 days, for 6 months. Results The first month after intervention seemed to be the critical period for significant kinematic changes in the discectomy and discopexy groups. However, 6 months after the bilateral interventions, no significant changes were noticed when compared with the control group. Conclusions In this study, bilateral discectomy and discopexy had no significant effect in mastication and ruminatory movement. The introduction of kinematic evaluation presents a new challenge that may contribute to the improvement of future studies on the TMJ domain.

- Study of a self-compacting fiber-reinforced concrete to be applied in the precast industryPublication . Paulo, Fernandes; João, Veludo; Nuno, Almeida; João, Baptista; Hugo, RodriguesThis paper describes an experimental program designed to obtain a self-compacting fber-reinforced concrete formulation based on the Faury’s reference curve, suitable to develop new solutions of non-structural slender precast elements in buildings. In the present work, it was possible to delimit the main parameters that allow to obtain a self-compacting concrete with high early age strength, allowing its application in the precast industry increasing the production cycles. The program has shown also the importance of the compatibility between the cement and the superplasticizer to prevent the undesirable efects of the high dosages of admixture in the fresh concrete performance, such as segregation and air content. The experimental campaign consisted in fve self-compacting concrete mixes and another fve self-compacting fber-reinforced concrete. The frst ones aimed to optimize parameters such as water/cement ratio, superplasticizer, and binder dosages in a plain SCC. Afterwards, these parameters were re-evaluated in another fve mixes due to the impact of the fbers in the concrete’s fresh performance. The slump fow and the compressive strength at diferent ages (1, 7, and 28 days) were evaluated for all mixes.

- Rubella antibodies in cord blood sera in Portugal: association with maternal age and vaccination statusPublication . Frade, J.; Nunes, C.; Mesquita, J. R.; Nascimento, M. São José; Gonçalves, G.This study evaluated the impact of maternal vaccination against rubella on the levels of specific rubella IgG (rIgG) in 198 newborn cord sera samples. Detailed maternal vaccination data were available. Specific rIgG was measured using a commercial enzyme immunoassay. Most mothers (78.8%) had been vaccinated against rubella at least once in their lives. In 15 (7.6%) cord sera samples, the concentration of specific rIgG was below 11 IU/ml, which was classified as seronegative. Statistical analysis using multiple logistic regression (n = 198) showed that newborns of mothers born between 1986 and 1995, and those born to unvaccinated mothers, were more likely to be seronegative (odds ratio (ORs) 5.2 and 4.9, respectively, adjusted for sex and gestational age). For vaccinated mothers (n = 156), those born between 1986 and 1995 were more likely to have seronegative newborns (OR 11.5 adjusting for sex, gestational age and time since last vaccination). Mothers of the 15 (7.6%) seronegative newborns might have been susceptible to rubella during pregnancy. Checking the vaccination status therefore recommended.
- Food Insecurity Is Associated with Low Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet and Adverse Health Conditions in Portuguese AdultsPublication . Gregório, Maria João; Rodrigues, Ana M.; Graça, Pedro; Sousa, Rute Dinis de; Dias, Sara; Branco, Jaime C.; Canhão, HelenaBackground: Food insecurity is a limited or uncertain access to the adequate food and is a significant public health problem. We aimed to assess determinants of food insecurity and the corresponding health impact in Portugal, a southern European country that faced a severe economic crisis. Methods: Data were derived from the Epidemiology of Chronic Diseases Cohort Study (EpiDoC), a population-based cohort of 10,661 individuals that were representative of the Portuguese adult population and followed since 2011. A cross-sectional analysis of the third wave of evaluation (EpiDoC 3) was performed between 2015 and 2016. Food insecurity was assessed with the household food insecurity psychometric scale. Socioeconomic, demographic, lifestyle, adherence to Mediterranean diet (MD), self-reported non-communicable disease, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) (EQ-5D-3L), physical function (HAQ score), and health resource consumption information was also collected. Results: The estimated proportion of food insecurity was 19.3% among a total of 5,653 participants. Food insecure households had low adherence to the MD (OR = 0.44; 95% IC 0.31-0.62). In addition, diabetes (OR = 1.69; 95% IC 1.20-2.40), rheumatic disease (OR = 1.67; 95% IC 1.07-2.60), and depression symptoms (OR = 1.50; 95% IC 1.09-2.06) were independently associated with food insecurity. On average, food insecure households had a lower HRQoL (OR = 0.18; 95% IC 0.11-0.31) and a higher disability (OR = 2.59; 95% IC 2.04-3.29). A significantly higher proportion of food insecure households reported being hospitalized (OR = 1.57; 95% IC 1.18-2.07) and had more public hospital medical appointments (OR = 1.48; 95% IC 1.12-1.94) in the previous 12 months. Conclusion: We found that food insecurity is highly prevalent in Portugal. Food insecurity was associated with low adherence to the MD, non-communicable chronic diseases, lower quality of life, and higher health resource consumption. Therefore, this study provides valuable insight into the relationship between food security and the diet and health of the population during an economic crisis.
- Co-exposure to environmental carcinogens in vivo induces neoplasia-related hallmarks in low genotoxicity events, even after removal of insultPublication . Martins, Marta; Silva, Ana; Costa, Maria H.; Miguel, Célia; Costa, Pedro M.Addressing the risk of mixed carcinogens in vivo under environmentally-realistic scenarios is still a challenge. Searching for adequate biomarkers of exposure requires understanding molecular pathways and their connection with neoplasia-related benchmark pathologies. Subjecting the zebrafish model to realistic concentrations of two genotoxicants and carcinogens, cadmium and benzo[a]pyrene, isolated and combined, yielded low levels of DNA damage. Altogether, the organisms' mechanisms of DNA repair, oxidative stress and phases I and II were not overwhelmed after two weeks of treatment. Still, transcriptional responses related to detoxification (epoxide hydrolase and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase) were higher in animals subjected to the combination treatment, inclusively following depuration. Nonetheless, inflammation and formation of hyperplasic foci in fish epithelia were more severe in animals exposed to the combined substances, showing slower recovery during depuration. Additionally, the combination treatment yielded unexpected increased expression of a ras-family oncogene homologue after depuration, with evidence for increased tp53 counter-response in the same period. The findings indicate that oncogene expression, cell proliferation and inflammation, may not require noticeable DNA damage to occur. Furthermore, albeit absent proof for neoplasic growth, the removal of chemical insult may promote tissue recovery but does not entirely clear molecular and histopathological endpoints that are commonly associated to neoplasia.
- Kinect sensor performance for Windows V2 through graphical processingPublication . Vargas, Javier; Mariño, Christian; Aldas, Clay; Morales, Luis; Toasa, RenatoThe present paper describes a study based on the loss and gain of frames that are obtained through sensors (color, depth, and body tracking) of Kinect V2. For this purpose, it is established a time to obtain each frames per second (FPS), evaluating a performance of sensors in three evaluation instances, using native Kinect V2 libraries and other graphic processing libraries. In addition, several experimental tests were carried out, in order to verify the best performance of a test application based on graphical processing of each sensor.
