- Blind Prediction Tests as a Benchmark to Improve the Seismic Response of Fibre ModelsPublication . Sousa, Romain; Correia, António A.; Almeida, João P.; Pinho, RuiThe seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete framed structures involves a number of nonlinear material and geometrical phenomena that are impossible to model exhaustively in a single model. Furthermore, past studies showed that the most correct modelling options from the scientific viewpoint are sometimes challenged by experimental results. Over the years, attempts have been made to identify and measure the importance of different modelling options. This work intends to consolidate some of these findings and further extend them in order to progressively bridge the gap between solidly established theoretical principles and shaking table test results. The response of three different structures used in international blind prediction test challenges serves as benchmark to assess the goodness-of-fit of alternative numerical solutions. The interpretation of the results highlights the sensitivity of the response with respect to the modelling choices and provides indications towards the development of optimized numerical analyses.
- A Competence-based Approach in Portuguese Early Childhood EducationPublication . Dias, Isabel Simões; Kowalski, IsabelThis paper reports on a Portuguese study in a teacher education context (Polytechnic Institute of Leiria) which, in Portugal, takes place in universities and educational institutes. It aims to reflect on a competence approach in the context of early childhood education. Starting from a concept of competence that considers the subject, action and context, students in the teacher education course (the Degree in Early Childhood Education) made lesson plans (termed, Pedagogic Practice Unit) during the academic year of 2008/2009 in accordance with the Portuguese national guidelines (PT, 1997). These curriculum guidelines do not identify the competences that children should develop. However, the competences identified by students in their lesson plans concerning the curricular areas (area of personal and social education, area of world knowledge, area of expression and communication) were grouped and analysed in relationship to the concept of competences previously assumed. From the data collected, we could infer that it is possible to identify competences to be developed by the children in a kindergarten context and that this identification can be made by the teacher according to the group of children with whom they are working. This research enhances the value of a competence-based approach.

- On row-structures in sheared polypropylene and a propylene–ethylene copolymerPublication . Olley, Robert H.; Mitchell, Geoffrey R.; Moghaddam, YasminThe crystallisation of polymers such as polyethylene or polypropylene from the melt is greatly influenced by the flow-thermal history prior to the crystallisation. We explore the influence of the chemical configuration of polypropylene based chains on the formation of row structures on crystallisation. We use a combination of in situ time resolved smallangle X-ray scattering, ex situ wide angle X-ray scattering with optical and scanning electron microscopy to show that row nuclei are formed in random copolymers of propylene with a limited amount of ethylene subjected to modest shear flow fields. We contrast observations performed using two homopolymers of isotactic polypropylene and one random copolymer of propylene and ethylene. We propose that it is not strictly necessary to argue that the row nuclei are already crystalline nor to invoke epitaxial crystallisation as the mechanism for the nucleation of lamellae, as similar structures can be formed on carbon nanotubes and fibrils of dibenzylidene sorbitol. The combination of microscopy and scattering provides a powerful approach to investigating these phenomena, especially as compared to either technique used in isolation.
- Mobile Games for ChildrenPublication . Martins, Sílvia; Silva, Catarina; Marcelino, LuísThis article presents a study on the use of educational games on mobile platforms, with touch screen, for children with ages between 2 and 3 years-old. The evaluation of the use of the games is based on the PLU model that proposes a three vector approach: Play, Learner and User Requirements. Hence, a set of paradigmatic games was selected that fulfil those three vectors defining the model. Experiments were carried out including the observation of the interaction of children during the use of selected games. The results show that the use of mobile technologies is extremely well accepted by children, and it was possible to reach a set of meaningful and relevant conclusions concerning the relationship between play / learning / user.
- A Distributed Architecture for Remote Validation of Software Licenses Using USB/IP ProtocolPublication . Antunes, Mário J.; Afonso, Albano; Pinto, Filipe MotaUSB dongles have been used by a wide range of software manufacturers to store a copy-protected of their application's license. The licenses validation procedure through USB dongles faces several concerns, as the risks of theft or losing dongle. Also, in scenarios where the number of dongles is reduced, users may have to wait for dongle access, which may lead to loss of productivity. In this paper we propose a client/server distributed architecture for remote software licenses validation, through USB/IP protocol. The proposed approach aims to take advantage of USB/IP for distributed access to a set of USB dongles physically connected to a remote USB server, over a TCP/IP network. We describe the deployment and enhancements made to an existing open source USB/IP implementation and also present the results obtained with this architecture in a real world scenario, for validation of computer forensics applications licenses that uses USB dongles.
- Time-Aware Focused Web CrawlingPublication . Pereira, Pedro; Macedo, Joaquim; Craveiro, Olga; Madeira, HenriqueThere is a plethora of information inside the Web. Even the top commercial search engines can not download and index all the available information. So, in the recent years, there are several research works on the design and implementation of focused topic crawlers and also on geographic scope crawlers. Despite other areas of information retrieval, research on Web crawling is not using the temporal information extracted from Web pages in the used crawling criteria. Therefore, our research challenge is the use of temporal data extracted from Web pages as the main crawling criteria to satisfy a given temporal focus. The importance of the time dimension is quite amplified when combined with topic or geography, but now we want to study it isolated. The used approach is based on temporal segmentation of Web pages text. It only follows links within segments tagged with dates in the scope of restriction. A precision around 75% was achieved in preliminary experimental results.
