- Certificação e inovação, orientação para o mercado e performance de inovação na Região de LeiriaPublication . Marques, Inês Isabel Carreira; Ferreira, Vítor Hugo dos SantosA presente dissertação tem como finalidade perceber como a Orientação para o Mercado e a norma NP 4457:2007, afetam a performance de inovação e o comportamento das empresas da região de Leiria. Nesse sentido, com o intuito de perceber melhor esta intenção, desenvolveu-se um questionário baseado na revisão da literatura da temática em estudo, na qual foi aplicado às 250 melhores empresas da região de Leiria e de seguida para conseguir atingir os objetivos desta investigação foi elaborado uma entrevista estruturada direcionada apenas para as duas únicas empresas que implementaram a norma IDI. Da análise dos dados recolhidos, destacam-se como principais conclusões a importância de inovação, a satisfação dos clientes, a imagem e qualidade dos serviços prestados que acabam por influenciar o comportamento do consumidor. No que diz respeito à Orientação para o Mercado, nem todas as dimensões se mostraram significativas, pois os resultados permitem afirmar que apenas a geração de informação de estudo de mercado e disseminação de informação de mercado apresentam uma influência positiva na performance de inovação, a geração de informação das necessidades do cliente e a Orientação para o Mercado de respostas ao mercado apresentam pouca importância. Contudo, o facto de existir interesse por parte da empresa em implementar a norma IDI cria uma conexão com a performance de inovação.
- The effects of ethical behavior on the profitability of firms : a study of the Portuguese construction industryPublication . Vieira, Maria Ermelinda Rendeiro; Marques, Tânia de Matos GomesThe main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the effects of ethical behavior on a firm’s financial profitability. Corporate social responsibility has been used as an indicator of ethical performance. After analyzing the financial indicators ROA and PM, from a sample of the twenty biggest civil construction companies in Portugal, between 2007 and 2011, we conclude that ROA is significantly related to a firm’s ethical performance. However, we did not find any statistical evidence that relates PM to ethical performance. Although the scores are very low on all CSR indexes, we can conclude that companies, who are exporting, seem to be more concerned with environmental issue than ethical issues. The top management in the civil construction should take a deeper look into their CSR activities, and should not neglect the impact social inactivity may have on their financial performance. Although, there are some examples to look up to, there is still a long way to go for the majority of companies in this industry. Limitations and recommendations for future research are provided at the end of this dissertation.
- Preparation of Triacylglycerols Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids from Sardine Oil Using a Rhizomucor miehei Lipase: Focus in the EPA/DHA RatioPublication . Bispo, Paulo; Batista, Irineu; Bernardino, Raul J.; Bandarra, Narcisa MariaThe increasing evidence on the differential biochemical effects of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)/docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) raises the need of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid concentrates with different amounts of these fatty acids. In the present work, physicochemical and enzymatic techniques were combined to obtain acylglycerols, mainly triacylglycerols (TAG), rich in n-3 fatty acids. Sardine oil was obtained by washing sardine (Sardina pilchardus) mince with a NaHCO3 solution, hydrolyzed in a KOH-ethanol solution, and concentrated with urea. The esterification reaction was performed in the stoichiometric proportion of substrates for re-esterification to TAG, with 10 % level of Rhizomucor miehei lipase based on the weight of substrates, without any solvent, during 48 h. This procedure led to approximately 88 % of acylglycerols, where more than 66 % were TAG and the concentration of n-3 fatty acids was higher than 60 %, the EPA and DHA ratio (EPA/DHA) was 4:1. The content of DHA in the unesterifed fraction (free fatty acids) increased from 20 to 54 %, while the EPA level in the same fraction decreased from 33 to 12.5 % (EPA/DHA ratio ≈1:4). Computational methods (density functional theory calculations) have been carried out at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level to explain some of the experimental results.
