- The correspondences and non-correspondences between Chinese and Portuguese language and culture: An analysis of botanical termsPublication . Zhang, YuxiongDespite belonging to two totally different language families, there is always a translatability between Chinese and Portuguese. The first Portuguese-Chinese dictionary by Matteo Ricci and Michele Ruggieri dating from the 17th century is the most persuasive evidence of this fact. On the one hand, there is no shortage of translation masterpieces today, and on the other hand, cultural exchange is intensifying at a rapid pace as the globalization process deepens. It is becoming urgent to pay attention to the differences existing in the two different cultures and the non-correspondences in their translation. Partial knowledge about another culture can lead to imprecise translation and result in equivocation of other related concepts in sequence. Undoubtedly, biological and cultural differences cause the phenomenon of non-correspondence the most. However, searching for similar concepts in the target language culture is also used as a frequent strategy, facilitating both the translator's work and the target audience's understanding. However, translation facilitation can bring misunderstandings. The non-matching of hyperonyms and hyponyms between the two cultures makes the translation of some concepts somewhat difficult. This paper aims to exemplify some of the issues of non-correspondence between the two languages, with the objective of contributing to a better understanding of the two cultures and the enhancement of translation between Chinese and Portuguese.
- Differences of Strategies Applied in English-Portuguese and English-Chinese Translations: From a Cultural Translation PerspectivePublication . Zhang, YuxiongTranslation studies often discuss the challenges posed by the lack of equivalents between cultures. It is widely believed that translation is frequently hindered by culture-specific items (CSIs) that exist between languages of different origins. This study analyzes 105 sets of translations of furniture related terms from IKEA’s websites using a corpus-based approach and a triangulation of quantitative and qualitative methods. The aim is to identify differences in translation strategies between English to European Portuguese and English to Chinese. CSI translation strategies, including foreignization, neutralization, and domestication, proposed by different authors, are used in the analysis. The data indicates that foreignization is more commonly utilized in translations from English to Chinese, while neutralization strategies are more frequently employed in Portuguese translations. While it may be possible to retain certain words with specific cultural references when translating between languages that share a similar culture background, such as English and Portuguese, this approach cannot be accepted in Chinese translations. Due to the distinctive grammatical structure of the Chinese language, it may be necessary to provide supplementary semantic information or even create new words in order to accurately translate certain CSIs in English into Chinese. This study illustrates how different writing systems can affect translation strategies and procedures for translating cultural references.
- Paixão ou oportunidades? O motivo dos brasileiros para aprender chinêsPublication . Zhang, YuxiongO ensino de chinês no Brasil tem acelerado bastante nos últimos anos, mas seu desenvolvimento está enfrentando uma série de desafios. Até o momento, existem menos de 10 pesquisas em relação ao ensino da língua chinesa no Brasil e nenhuma preocupa os estudantes brasileiros, sobretudo a sua motivação para aprendizagem. O presente trabalho se baseia em um questionário que envolveu 97 estudantes de um curso online de chinês implementado em uma universidade pública no Nordeste do Brasil. Um questionário adaptado a partir de um conjunto de modelos amplamente utilizados nos estudos de motivação da aprendizagem de línguas foi utilizado para coletar dados. Os resultados indicam que os aprendizes brasileiros têm uma motivação relativamente abrangente de aprender a língua chinesa, porém a maior parte deles manifestam uma vontade autônoma de adquirir a língua e uma inclinação intrínseca pelo idioma e cultura chinesa.
- T/V Distinction in Second Language AcquisitionPublication . Zhang, YuxiongThe T/V distinction refers to the use of different second-person pronouns to signal social relationships, such as familiarity, respect, or formality, a phenomenon common in many languages, including Chinese Mandarin and European Portuguese. Modern European Portuguese has lost its traditional V-form, with younger generations often using você to express formality and seniority. In contrast, the younger generations often using você to express formality and seniority. In contrast, the posteriorly developed V-form nin has been well preserved and remains frequently used in Chinese Mandarin. This study investigates whether learning a foreign language influences speakers’ choices of address forms in their first language and examines cross-linguistic associations in pronoun use. Three experiments were conducted to examine the influence of a first language on a second language, the reverse influence of a second language on a first language, and the differences in address form preferences between Chinese and Portuguese speakers. Quantitative and qualitative analyses show that learning a foreign language does not effectively influence speakers’ decisions regarding pronoun usage in their first language. Learners tend to establish a direct association between pronoun usage in the two languages. For instance, Chinese speakers generally favor the V-form in most contexts, except when addressing friends or peers of the same age. In contrast, Portuguese speakers consider factors such as formality of the context, age, social relationships, respectfulness, and social status when choosing address forms.
- Using ChatGPT in Learning Chinese Mandarin: An Interactive Dictionary Rather Than a Content FacilitatorPublication . Zhang, YuxiongAs a widely discussed AI tool in recent times, ChatGPT has been the subject of extensive research, particularly in EFL learning contexts where it is often utilized as a sophisticated grammar reviewer. This study shifted its focus to exploring ChatGPT's role in Chinese Mandarin acquisition. Seven senior students from an undergraduate Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese translation program in Portugal participated, with six completing a structured four-task learning activity. Analysis of participant conversations with ChatGPT, a written test conducted immediately after the activity, and a questionnaire assessing satisfaction, perceived learning effectiveness, prior tool usage, and learning outcomes revealed that ChatGPT can function as an interactive, adaptable, and comprehensive real-time dictionary for Chinese Mandarin. It effectively explains word meanings and expressions in specific linguistic contexts and suggests appropriate idiomatic expressions based on learners’ prompts. Contrary to previous findings, participants reported lower satisfaction and limited perceived learning effectiveness. This may be due to the role ChatGPT played in the present study, where it was used merely as a chatbot for target-language interaction rather than as a tool facilitating their learning process by providing ready-made responses. Additionally, participants’ attitudes and preferences for traditional learning methods may also have contributed to these results. The study suggests that effective integration of ChatGPT into Chinese language learning practices requires time and careful consideration.
