- Functional health literacy: psychometric properties of the newest vital sign for Portuguese adolescents (NVS-PTeen)Publication . Santos, Osvaldo; Stefanovska-Petkovska, Miodraga; Virgolino, Ana; Miranda, Ana Cristina; Costa, Joana; Fernandes, Elisabete; Cardoso, Susana; Carneiro, António VazSelf-management of health requires skills to obtain, process, understand, and use healthrelated information. Assessment of adolescents’ functional health literacy requires valid, reliable, and low-burden tools. The main objective of this study was to adapt and study the psychometric properties of the Newest Vital Sign for the Portuguese adolescents’ population (NVS-PTeen). Classic psychometric indicators of reliability and validity were combined with item response theory (IRT) analyses in a cross-sectional survey, complemented with a 3-month test-retest assessment. The NVSPTeen was self-administered to students enrolled in grades 8 to 12 (12 to 17 years old) in a school setting. Overall, 386 students (191 girls) from 16 classes of the same school participated in the study (mean age = 14.5; SD = 1.5). Internal reliability of the NVS-PTeen was = 0.60. The NVS-PTeen total score was positively and significantly correlated with Portuguese (r = 0.28) and mathematics scores (r = 0.31), school years (r = 0.31), and age (r = 0.19). Similar to the original scale (for the U.S.), the NVSPTeen is composed of two dimensions, reading-related literacy and numeracy. Temporal reliability is adequate, though with a learning effect. IRT analyses revealed differences in difficulty and discriminative capacity among items, all with adequate outfit and infit values. Results showed that the NVS-PTeen is valid and reliable, sensible to inter-individual educational differences, and adequate for regular screening of functional health literacy in adolescents.
- The Impact of Perceived Organizational Justice, Psychological Contract, and the Burnout on Employee Performance: The Moderating Role of Organizational Support, in the Portuguese ContextPublication . Virgolino, Ana; Coelho, Arnaldo; Ribeiro, NeuzaPurpose: To identify the impact of perceived organizational justice (POJ), the psychological contract (PC), and burnout (BUR) on the employee’s individual performance (IP). The moderating role of perceived organizational support (POS) is analysed. Methodology: The study uses a structured questionnaire to gather data from a cross–sectional sample of 407 employees. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) is used to test the proposed hypotheses, and a multi-group analysis is conducted to find how the perception of the PCV can impact on the suggested relationships. Findings: POJ has a positive impact on the PC and on IP. However, the impact of the PC and the first two dimensions of BUR on IP are not significant. POS moderates some of the suggested relationships. Implications: contributes to the knowledge about the combined impact of POJ, the PC and BUR, introducing the role of POS as a moderating variable in the relationships between organizations and employees. The global results may inform strategies to secure positive human resource management (HRM) outcomes. Originality: This research is original in order these concepts and relationships of mediation and moderation are presented in a single study providing a model that depicts a chain of important effects.
- The impact of the perceptions of justice and organizational support on employee performance: the moderating role of psychological contract violationPublication . Virgolino, Ana; Coelho, Arnaldo; Ribeiro, NeuzaThe purpose of this research is to identify the impact of perceived organizational justice (POJ) and perceived organizational support (POS) on the individual performance (IP) of employees, directly or by the mediation of POJ, considering the moderating role of psychological contract violation (PCV). The study uses a structured questionnaire to gather data from a cross–sectional sample of 407 employees. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) is used to test the proposed hypotheses, and a multi-group analysis is conducted to identify how the perception of the PCV can impact on the suggested relations. The results show that POJ mediates the relationship between POS and individual performance. However, the impact of POS on performance is not significant. It was also possible to conclude that the perception of the PCV moderates the relation between POS and IP and that this is mediated by POJ. This research contributes to a better understanding of the impacts of organizational justice, introducing the role of POS and PCV as mediating and moderating variables, respectively. The global results of this study contribute to a better understanding of behaviours and attitudes of employees and managers, and can inform strategies to secure positive company and employee outcomes.
- The Impacts of Perceptions of Justice and Organizational Support on Employee Performance: The Moderating Role of Satisfaction with Management, in the Portuguese ContextPublication . Coelho, Arnaldo; Virgolino, Ana; Ribeiro, Neuza; Weersma, L.The objective of this paper is to identify the impact of perceived organizational justice (POJ) and perceived organizational support (POS) on the individual performance (IP) of employees and on burnout (BUR), considering the moderating role of satisfaction with organizational management (SOM). The study uses a structured questionnaire to gather self-reporting data from a cross-sectional sample of 407 employees. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to test the proposed hypotheses, and a multi-group analysis is conducted to find how the perception SOM can impact on the suggested relationships. The results show that POJ and POS have a positive impact on psychological contract (PC) and affective commitment (AC). Happiness (HAP) and AC have a positive impact on IP and PC has a negative impact on the BUR. It was also possible to conclude that SOM moderates the relationships between PC and BUR and, between leader-member exchange (LMX) and AC. This investigation provides a better understanding and integration of these concepts and relationship of moderation in a single study and provides a model that depicts a chain of important effects that may inform strategies to secure positive human resources management outcomes.
