- Active and Assisted Living Ecosystem for the ElderlyPublication . Our proposal was designed to add several services developed to meet the needs of the senior population, namely services to improve social inclusion and increase contribution to society. Moreover, the solution monitors the vital signs of elderly individuals, as well as environmental parameters and behavior patterns, in order to seek eminent danger situations and predict potential hazardous issues, acting in accordance with the various alert levels specified for each individual. The platform was tested by seniors in a real scenario. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed ecosystem was well accepted and is easy to use by seniors.

- eServices - Service Platform for Pervasive Elderly CarePublication . Marcelino, Isabel; Laza, Rosalía; Domingues, Patrício; Gómez-Meire, Silvana; Pereira, AntónioIn this paper, we present a solution to improve elderly’s quality of life. eServices – Service platform for pervasive elderly care was designed to aggregate several services developed to meet senior population’s needs. It monitors basic life signs, environment variables and uses personal location technology. Besides sensor services, eServices solution contains digital services align with emotional and social care needs. Due to target population specifications, eServices was designed to be as simple and accessible as possible in order to remove technological barriers. One of eServices major features is to detect imminent danger situations, act accordingly. It also collects the data from the sensors, location routines and from the interactions between the elderlies and the provided services to detect behavior deviations in order to act preventively. The platform was tested by seniors in real scenario. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed platform was well accepted and easy to use by seniors, which demonstrated enthusiasm and interest in daily bases use.
- SSN: Senior Social Network for Improving Quality of LifePublication . Marcelino, Isabel; Laza, Rosalía; Pereira, António; Pereira, AntónioThe world population is aging and loneliness has become one of the major issues affecting the quality of life of our senior citizens. Additionally, we have observed that social computing increases social contexts through the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT). Smartphone and tablet proliferation also empower people to interact and create and share contents, strengthening new forms of communication independent of time and space. Therefore, the senior population would have a lot to gain by using social networks to overcome their solitude. Nevertheless, the elderly are still digitally excluded due to their lack of technological skills, as well as age-related impairments. This work presents a social network tailored for the senior population where the feelings of belonging, companionship and connectivity, well-being and interaction, meaningfulness, and emotional comfort are empowered. Our contribution aims to digitally include all seniors—independent of their educational level, literacy, or technological skills—by promoting a social network that allows them to share their life experiences, strengthen communication, improve their awareness of still playing an active and useful role in society, encourage emotional comfort, improve their health condition, and provide new forms of joyful entertainment in their lives. The final evaluation indicates that all seniors were very enthusiastic about the experience.
- Using ICT for Tacit Knowledge Preservation in Old AgePublication . Marcelino, Isabel; Góis, José; Laza, Rosalía; Pereira, AntónioAs the world population is aging, numerous challenges were raised. How to maintain a sustainable aging? How to increase the active role of older adults in society? How to promote healthy aging along with the improvement of social and technological inclusion and enhance emotional well-being? How to preserve the vast tacit knowledge existent in seniors? Pervasive computing can giving an enormous contribution to overcome this issues. In the present paper we introduce eService platform as a novel service ecosystem mainly developed for senior population, including life experiences and knowledge record service. We have researched and selected the most relevant accessibility guidelines concerning senior population and made a low fidelity prototype, followed by both fidelity prototypes, one with and one without guideline application. Finally we conducted usability tests and semi structured interviews with 6 individuals to validate our work. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed guideline checklist was validated, well accepted and easy to use by seniors. They also validate the extreme importance of knowledge preservation.
- Using the eServices Platform for Detecting Behavior Patterns Deviation in the Elderly Assisted Living: A Case StudyPublication . Marcelino, Isabel; Lopes, David; Reis, Michael; Silva, Fernando; Laza, Rosalía; Pereira, AntónioWorld’s aging population is rising and the elderly are increasingly isolated socially and geographically. As a consequence, in many situations, they need assistance that is not granted in time. In this paper, we present a solution that follows the CRISP-DM methodology to detect the elderly’s behavior pattern deviations that may indicate possible risk situations. To obtain these patterns, many variables are aggregated to ensure the alert system reliability and minimize eventual false positive alert situations. These variables comprehend information provided by body area network (BAN), by environment sensors, and also by the elderly’s interaction in a service provider platform, called eServices—Elderly Support Service Platform. eServices is a scalable platform aggregating a service ecosystem developed specially for elderly people. This pattern recognition will further activate the adequate response. With the system evolution, it will learn to predict potential danger situations for a specified user, acting preventively and ensuring the elderly’s safety and well-being. As the eServices platform is still in development, synthetic data, based on real data sample and empiric knowledge, is being used to populate the initial dataset. The presented work is a proof of concept of knowledge extraction using the eServices platform information. Regardless of not using real data, this work proves to be an asset, achieving a good performance in preventing alert situations.
