Preface: This special issue contains selected papers presented at the second edition of the International Conference on Direct Digital Manufacturing and Polymers held in Marinha Grande, Portugal. The conference is heldbiannually and takes place in India(University of Karnatak)and Portugal(Institute Polytechnic of Leiria)on an alternating basis. In 2017 was held in Marinha Grande, an important industrial area of Portugal and home of the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development, Institute Polytechnic of Leiria. The conference coincided with the 10thanniversary of the foundation of the Centre and a special celebratory gala dinner was held at the Hotel Mar e Sol. Director of the Centre, Professor Nuno Alvespresented to ProfessorPramod Gai, the Vice-Chancellorthe University of Karnatak, the “International Institutional Collaborator2017” award. Other awardswere presented and the Director, Professor Alves acknowledged the strong support received by CDRSP from the President of the Marinha Grande MunicIpality.pt_PT
The thirty papers reflect the rich diversity of the conference with participants from 13 countries and the range of applications of Direct Digital Manufacturing. Direct Digital Manufacturing is a family of emerging technologies which allow a digital design to be used to produce an object or a part without the use of complex or dedicated tooling such as moulds. It replaces the mass production of 20th Century Technologies with the possibilities of mass personalisation of products. The papers in the first chapter focus on the rich variety of applications of direct digital manufacturing. It is appropriate for a conference held in the third largest mould making area of the world, that several of these papers address and provide solutions for the mould making area. A further paper of note is “On the conceptual notion of a Universal Printing Machine” authored by Ferreira, Alves and Mitchell, this is the first paper on this topic which addresses the future development of additive manufacturing.Direct Digital Manufacturing is also suitable to biomedical applications and so it is fitting that the papers in the second chapter in this special issue are all related to analysis of the medical aspects of using the Direct Digital Manufacturing technologies. The paper “Smart Polymers in Drug Delivery Applications” is related to the Invited CDRSP Anniversary Lecture on Materials Smart Biopolymers presented by Professor Mahadevappa Karidiraganavar of Karnatak University, India. The Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development aims to “Manufacture a better future”. Consideration of the scientific output of the conference suggests we are well on our way.The editors would like to acknowledge the hard work of all the authors in preparing these papers and in particular we thank Dr Carla Moura for managing the manuscripts and the editing and updating process.pt_PT
