Resumo(s)

This report, produced as part of the Master’s and Specialisation programme in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing at the School of Health of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, aims to outline the competencies developed in order to obtain a Master’s degree in Nursing and the title of Specialist Nurse in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing (EEESMP). It is divided into three parts: a description of the learning contexts in Clinical Teaching; a critical-reflective analysis of the activities undertaken to acquire common competencies (Regulation No. 140/2019) and those specific to the EEESMP (Regulation No. 515/2018); and a description of the stages and results achieved in the development of the Continuous Quality Improvement Project in Nursing Care (PMCQCE): Promotion of Self-Esteem in patients with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Self-esteem is linked to addictive behaviours and can act as either a protective or a risk factor (Van den Berg et al., 2026; Khazaee-Pool et al., 2025 & Mann et al., 2004). Low self-esteem increases the likelihood of mental health disorders, social problems and substance abuse. In Portugal, hospital admissions for alcoholrelated problems rose by 20% compared to 2021 (SICAD, 2023). The PMCQCE presented here stems from a problem encountered in clinical practice: low self-esteem among clients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and the lack of a specialised intervention in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing (MHPN) in this area. Thus, this project aims to improve the quality of care provided to this population through the design and implementation of a specialised intervention, and to improve the self-esteem of clients with PUA. Within the framework of this PMCQCE, a quantitative exploratory action research study was developed, conducted with a purposive sample of patients with low self-esteem and a clinical diagnosis of PUA, admitted to the psychiatric ward. The specialised intervention was structured into four individual sessions using a psychotherapeutic approach, based on the helping relationship and utilising artistic-expressive mediation techniques. The sessions focused on the dimensions of self-image, self-confidence and self-acceptance. The results showed that, in the pre-intervention phase, participants exhibited high levels of alcohol consumption and low self-esteem. Following the intervention, improvements in self-esteem were observed in all participants, along with high levels of satisfaction with the intervention. It is suggested that the project be continued in an inpatient setting and during the post-discharge (followup) period, and that it be replicated in other inpatient settings with the same substance use issues.
