This dissertation investigates self-portraiture as an artistic practice and as an instrument for constructing and deconstructing personal identity in contemporary times. It starts from the premise that the "self" is a fluid, fragmented, and constantly changing concept, shaped by relationships with others, with images, and with time. Through the analysis of image fragmentation as an artistic strategy, it explores the multiplicity and complexity of identity, questioning the boundaries between true and false, conscious and unconscious, mask and essence. The research is developed through the intertwining of a practical and theoretical approach, integrating different techniques such as oil painting, sculpture, and photography, in dialogue with research and reflection on how some essayists thought about the redefinition of contemporary identity and how self-portraiture allows us to explore and gather evidence about the contemporary condition of identity. The authorial artistic practice focused on the exploration of visual fragmentation as a metaphor for inner fragmentation, reflecting on how identity is revealed or hidden in self-representation. Some fundamental concepts are addressed, such as the role of the mirror and reflection in the construction of identity, as well as the paradox of representation, as an act that is simultaneously revealing and staged.
