- Conceptual Framework for the Research on Quality of LifePublication . Rodrigues, José; Borrego, Carla Chicau; Ruivo, Paula; Sobreiro, Pedro; Catela, David; Amendoeira, José; Matos, RuiThe article presents the reference framework for multidisciplinary research at the Life Quality Research Centre (LQRC). The research paradigm about the citizens' quality of life in society imposes a multifaceted and complex analysis. At the LQRC we address this as thematically divided into six scientific areas: education and training; physical activity and healthy lifestyles; food production and technology on food behaviors; organizational dynamics; motor behavior; and individual and community health. These areas are clearly related to the concept of quality of life. They fit the goals and dynamics of the research center. In each section, the authors develop the themes of research projects and the challenges that characterize research in the area of quality of life. It is clear that there is an agreement and understanding that ensures that quality of life research is on the agenda of the world organizations related to scientific research and human development. This is a real challenge for scientific research centers, since multidisciplinary paradigms are the foundation of our collective organization, and the evolution of research on quality of life could fulfil current needs and lead to the improvement of citizen lives.
- Evaluation of an educational project for the development of the autonomy of life in young people leaving residential carePublication . Santos, Rui; Margarido, Cristóvão; Pocinho, Ricardo; Silva, Tânia; Póvoa, VanessaOne of the protection measures provided to at-risk children and young people in Portugal is residential care. Residential care facilities foster children and young people from unstructured families, providing them with conditions that may allow to enhance their full development, including their education, well-being and preparation for life autonomy. Projet' Ar-te is an intervention project developed at Casa do Canto, under the direction of the Portuguese Association for the Rights of Minors and the Family - CrescerSer, financed from 2012 to 2015 through the "Children and Youth at Risk"Program of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. The main objectives of this project were the creation of the Life Skills Development Program (PDCV) and the Support and Monitoring Structure (ESAAC) for the young people leaving residential care, in order to provide them with a close affective rear, helping to face the challenges and difficulties they encounter successively outside the residential care facility. Through ethnobiographic interviews with two young women experiencing the project for one year, the aim was to understand their perceptions regarding two moments: the residential care period and the experiences after leaving Casa do Canto through the support provided by the ESAAC Structure. The results showed that participation in the project activities provided significant moments during residential care, which seem to have an important impact on the autonomy strategies adopted by young women after leaving the facility.
- Extending Open Space Technology for Blended LearningPublication . Pereira, Isabel; Figueiredo, António Dias deThis paper presents a pedagogical strategy for the exploration of blended-learning in higher education. A key component is the adoption of Open Space Technology (OST) to group students according to their motivation for the topics to be studied and tasks to be performed, rather than following their personal affinities. We have developed and tested the strategy throughout two academic years. In the first year, we explored OST in its regular, face-to-face, approach. Although the results were good, we felt that learning could be further improved with a period of on-line discussion after the face-to-face session. With this in mind, in the following year we explored a combination of face-to-face and on-line activities, in what we called blended-OST (or b-OST). We concluded that this approach could lead to a deeper discussion of the proposed tasks, to the emergence of additional possible tasks, and to the participation of students who tended to shy away from expressing their opinions orally. The data collected shows that the involvement of the students increased in the second year. In our view, the use of blended-OST has contributed to the creation of a better learning context. The students' opinions, collected after the course, also support this view.
- Human-Bed Interaction: A Methodology and Tool to Measure Postural Behavior during Sleep of the Air Force MilitaryPublication . Desouzart, Gustavo; Vilar, Ernesto Filgueiras; Melo, Filipe; Matos, RuiThe behavioral and postural habits and sleep rhythm of air force military change depending on the specialty work at the airbase or other types of events but we did not find anything in the literature to analyze and evaluate this behavior through sleep disorders. Perhaps this is related to the fact that the evaluation of this behavior is complex and the observation of these postural behaviors in the environmental context is needed. However the observation methodology based on ISEE software [9] allows the classification and registration of postural behaviors for long periods of time and can be applied in this context. This paper presents a study whose objective was to research the human interaction with postural behaviors during sleep in the residences' bedrooms of male air force military during the periods in which the subjects were asleep, awake, out of bed, doing activities, using a pillow in different time periods and with ecological validation with observation method and Visual Analogical Scale (VAS). A sample of 8666 observations, which corresponds to 240 sleep-hours of 12 air force military, was classified into six (6) Interaction Categories (IC). The results show that 50,2% of the participants presented the Lateral position (25,38% on the left and 24,86% on the right) as the most common postural behavior during sleep and 94,1% used only one pillow under their head. In the IĆs, the most common interactions were sleep period using the pillow with 66,47%, followed by category Out of bed with 25,32% and followed the category the activities and using the pillow with 6,95%. Findings of this study allow suggesting what graphical interface designers must seek as new strategies and solutions for behavior change in posture in bed, exploring other peripheral equipment for sleep position; or, at least, to improve the posture of the participants when using the number and the placement of the pillow in bed and if these Ergonomic changes can influence the reduction in back pain indications.
- Promoting motivation and participation in higher education: A b-learning experiencePublication . Pereira, Isabel; Figueiredo, Antonio DiasA b-learning based pedagogical strategy is proposed to promote motivation and participation in higher education. It employs Open Space Technology (OST), collaborative activities, peer evaluation, individual reflection, and the sharing of a final purpose. OST lets the students group themselves according to their interest in a task and develops a mobilizing sense of belonging. A peer-evaluation phase is included, in which each group evaluates and gives suggestions to another group. The groups then produce the final versions of their work, which are presented at a final event whose format has been negotiated to strengthen motivation and shared commitment. The students are also expected to reflect individually on their own participation and learning during the course. The paper describes the pedagogical experiments that supported the development and validation of the strategy and explains why it had a positive impact on student participation and on the overall learning process.
