- Blind Guide: An Ultrasound Sensor-based Body Area Network for Guiding Blind PeoplePublication . Pereira, António; Nunes, Nelson; Vieira, Daniel; Costa, Nuno; Fernandes, Hugo; Barroso, JoãoWireless Sensor Networks, in particular Wireless Body Area Networks, is a technology suggested by the research community as allowing elderly people, or people with some kind of disability, to live in a safer, responsive and comfortable environment while at their homes. One of the most active threats to the autonomous life of blind people is the quantity and variety of obstacles they face while moving, whether they are obstacles in the footpath or obstacles coming out from the walls of buildings. Hence, it is necessary to develop a solution that helps or assists blind people while moving either in indoor or outdoor scenarios, simultaneously allowing the use of the use of white cane or the Seeing Eye dog. In this article, the authors propose the use of an ultra-sound based body area network for obstacle detection and warning as a complementary and effective solution for aiding blind people when moving from place to place. According to the cost estimates of the solution and to the negligible setup time, this could be a real effective complementary solution for blind people.
- Coding Tree Depth Estimation for Complexity Reduction of HEVCPublication . Correa, G.; Assunção, P.; Agostini, L.; Cruz, L. A. D. S.The emerging HEVC standard introduces a number of tools which increase compression efficiency in comparison to its predecessors at the cost of greater computational complexity. This paper proposes a complexity control method for HEVC encoders based on dynamic adjustment of the newly proposed coding tree structures. The method improves a previous solution by adopting a strategy that takes into consideration both spatial and temporal correlation in order to decide the maximum coding tree depth allowed for each coding tree block. Complexity control capability is increased in comparison to a previous work, while compression losses are decreased by 70%. Experimental results show that the encoder computational complexity can be downscaled to 60% with an average bit rate increase around 1.3% and a PSNR decrease under 0.07 dB.
- Diffusion and distribution of touristic routes: Web platform's architecture on tourism contextPublication . Hugo Miguel Pereira Chambel; Pereira, António Manuel de JesusIn this document it will be described the architecture of an information system that was originated in an innovative idea based roots in joining two milestones of the social environment, tourism and technology. Separating the components then it will be described tourism, represented by tourism regions and the technology that allows navigation in small footpaths using Android mobile devices, which result on support of information and communication technologies to tourism and regions themselves.
- An EAI Based Integration Solution for Science and Research Outcomes Information ManagementPublication . Sequeira, Fernando Rosa; Frantz, Rafael Z.; Yevseyeva, Iryna; Emmerich, Michael T.M.; Basto-Fernandes, VitorIn this paper we present an Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) based proposal for research outcomes information management. The proposal is contextualized in terms of national and international science and research outcomes information management, corresponding supporting information systems and ecosystems. Information systems interoperability problems, approaches, technologies and tools are presented and applied to the research outcomes information management case. A business and technological perspective is provided, including the conceptual analysis and modelling, an integration solution based in a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) and the orchestration engine to execute the proposed solution. For illustrative purposes, the role and information system needs of a research unit is assumed as the representative case.
- Elder Care Modular SolutionPublication . Marcelino, Isabel; Pereira, António Manuel de JesusThe Elder Care solution has two primary goals: monitoring vital signs, sending alerts to family and specialized help and provide a social network in order to wrap all older population to avoid social isolation [1][2]. In this paper we will show the methodology used to obtain Elder Care's architecture and point some guidelines to our present work: Elder Care's implementation.
- inGuide – Interactive GuidePublication . Batista, Filipe André Gomes; Rodrigues, Nuno; Gonçalves, AlexandrinoThis paper describes the inGuide - Interactive Guide application, a context-aware tourist guide that is presently available to Android smartphones. This application takes advantage of technologies such as Augmented Reality and geolocation in order to provide contextual information in a simple and interactive way. inGuide is a modular application which provides a package management system avoiding the need for a different version of the application for each city. Simultaneously it also surpasses one of the major hurdles related with mobile tourist applications, which is assuming always-on data connection and high speed network access.
- Open Source para a Administração Pública: J2Gov - Joomla to governmentPublication . Martins, Pedro Matos; Pereira, AntónioThis project is the development of a component for the Content Management System Joomla, titled J2Gov (Joomla to government), which can cater for the requirements of public administration bodies, which relate directly to the public. In a single platform, a tool to provide an interface for online services, presential services, document management and control and measurement times and performances. In this context, this project was developed as a way to meet the needs of public administration, regardless of their size, financial capacity or technical expertise of its human resources in the field of information technology.
- Planning the Deployment of Indoor Wireless Sensor Networks Through Multiobjective Evolutionary TechniquesPublication . Lanza-Gutierrez, Jose M.; Gomez-Pulido, Juan A.; Mendes, Silvio; M. Ferreira; Pereira, J. S.This work deals with how to efficiently deploy an indoor wireless sensor network, assuming a novel approach in which we try to leverage existing infrastructure. Thus, given a set of low-cost sensors, which can be plugged into the grid or powered by batteries, a collector node, and a building plan, including walls and plugs, the purpose is to deploy the sensors optimising three conflicting objectives: average coverage, average energy cost, and average reliability. Two MultiObjective (MO) genetic algorithms are assumed to solve this issue, NSGA-II and SPEA2. These metaheuristics are applied to solve the problem using a freely available data set. The results obtained are analysed considering two MO quality metrics: hypervolume and set coverage. After applying a statistical methodology widely accepted, we conclude that SPEA2 provides the best performance on average considering such data set.
- A Practical Solution for Automatic Service Discovery and Usage over Resource Poor Ad-hoc Sensor NetworksPublication . Costa, Nuno; Pereira, António; Serôdio, CarlosAd-hoc networks present new challenges due to its mobility, lack of infrastructure and resource limited devices. This means that service discovery (and usage) protocols targeted for traditional networks are not suitable for ad-hoc networks because they usually rely on the fixed and high availability characteristics of nodes to run important services. Ad-hoc networks need service discovery protocols compliant with its mobility and changing topology. In this paper we present a practical solution capable of provide automatic service discovery and usage over ad-hoc networks of resource poor sensor nodes. The solution was not developed from the ground-up. Instead, it was based on a (successfully) solution for traditional networks but then modified to address ad-hoc networks while keeping it original semantics.
- Selecting Optimal Subset of Security ControlsPublication . Yevseyeva, Iryna; Basto-Fernandes, Vitor; Emmerich, Michael; Van Moorsel, AadChoosing an optimal investment in information security is an issue most companies face these days. Which security controls to buy to protect the IT system of a company in the best way? Selecting a subset of security controls among many available ones can be seen as a resource allocation problem that should take into account conflicting objectives and constraints of the problem. In particular, the security of the system should be improved without hindering productivity, under a limited budget for buying controls. In this work, we provide several possible formulations of security controls subset selection problem as a portfolio optimization, which is well known in financial management. We propose approaches to solve them using existing single and multiobjective optimization algorithms.
