- Diffusion and distribution of touristic routes: Web platform's architecture on tourism contextPublication . Hugo Miguel Pereira Chambel; Pereira, António Manuel de JesusIn this document it will be described the architecture of an information system that was originated in an innovative idea based roots in joining two milestones of the social environment, tourism and technology. Separating the components then it will be described tourism, represented by tourism regions and the technology that allows navigation in small footpaths using Android mobile devices, which result on support of information and communication technologies to tourism and regions themselves.
- Discrete Compound Tests and Dorfman’s Methodology in the Presence of MisclassificationPublication . Santos, Rui; Martins, João Paulo; Felgueiras, MiguelCompound tests can be used to save resources for classification or estimation purposes in clinical trials and quality control. Nevertheless, the methodologies that are usually applied are restricted to qualitative group tests. Moreover, when quantitative compound tests are applied the problem is to ascertain whether the amount of some substance of any individual in the group is greater or lower than a prefixed threshold. An overview of the applications of the discrete compound tests highlights the advantages (to save resources) and disadvantages (higher probability of misclassification), and suggests criteria to assess the suitability of applying Dorfman’s methodology.
- An EAI Based Integration Solution for Science and Research Outcomes Information ManagementPublication . Sequeira, Fernando Rosa; Frantz, Rafael Z.; Yevseyeva, Iryna; Emmerich, Michael T.M.; Basto-Fernandes, VitorIn this paper we present an Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) based proposal for research outcomes information management. The proposal is contextualized in terms of national and international science and research outcomes information management, corresponding supporting information systems and ecosystems. Information systems interoperability problems, approaches, technologies and tools are presented and applied to the research outcomes information management case. A business and technological perspective is provided, including the conceptual analysis and modelling, an integration solution based in a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) and the orchestration engine to execute the proposed solution. For illustrative purposes, the role and information system needs of a research unit is assumed as the representative case.
- Energy systems models for efficiency towards Smart CitiesPublication . Galvao, Joao R.; Moreira, Licinio M.; Teixeira Ascenso, Rita Margarida; Leitao, Sergio A.The way of energy use in the European Union (EU) needs to be improved by continuous promotion of sustainability and an efficient manner to ensure citizens' quality of life. This work presents two new energy models: i) retrofit of the present energy system in a public library building; ii) improving energy efficiency in public lighting using new technological solution Light Emission Diode (LED), new methods of control and management while leveraging the use of renewable energy as power supply. Both can act as a vehicle to disseminate concepts of Smart City (SC) and Internet of Things (IoT), also, as the development of energy production based on renewable energies: biomass and sunlight. With these two proposals it is intended to improve energy efficiency behaviours reducing energy waste, making use of the latest techniques and equipment, which promote more efficient management. This will lead to an effective reduction of energy consumption associated with public lighting while maintaining recommended levels of luminance in different situations. Finally this research is also to complete, a long-term goal of the EU, which is to develop a society that better uses their energy systems and, in Portugal, increase the use of available renewable energy sources.
- The Influence of Information Systems in the Management of Patients Service in the Hospital of LeiriaPublication . Conceição, Cristiana; Borges, José; Ascenso, Rita M.T.Hospital patients prefer to access the Emergency Department to be treated; this preference leads to some concern by the directors of public hospitals. Though, it is important to understand how consultation management is defined, especially in terms of information technology that can help in patients’ management. Among several Information Systems it was evaluated a specific SMS service, checking if it responded to the patients’ needs, whether patients were satisfied with the service and if it was efficient as expected, to reduce absence in scheduled encounters. So, it was followed a methodology: check faults to medical consultations and rebooking, along October 2014, then conduct questionnaires to patients by telephone, in order to understand if they are satisfied with the SMS service to recall a scheduled medical consultation, and if the service failure has or not to do with their faults. Among 2337 patients that fault in a month, 113 patients were questioned by phone (from 441 selected), 87.6% had received SMS on the mobile phone to alert the consultation day and 79.6% feel satisfied with the messaging service. Thus, the SMS service is expected to have an impact on reducing absence to scheduled consultations once patients are satisfied.
- A Practical Solution for Automatic Service Discovery and Usage over Resource Poor Ad-hoc Sensor NetworksPublication . Costa, Nuno; Pereira, António; Serôdio, CarlosAd-hoc networks present new challenges due to its mobility, lack of infrastructure and resource limited devices. This means that service discovery (and usage) protocols targeted for traditional networks are not suitable for ad-hoc networks because they usually rely on the fixed and high availability characteristics of nodes to run important services. Ad-hoc networks need service discovery protocols compliant with its mobility and changing topology. In this paper we present a practical solution capable of provide automatic service discovery and usage over ad-hoc networks of resource poor sensor nodes. The solution was not developed from the ground-up. Instead, it was based on a (successfully) solution for traditional networks but then modified to address ad-hoc networks while keeping it original semantics.
- Smart Remote Control Design for SeniorsPublication . Pereira, António; Silva, Fernando; Ribeiro, José; Marcelino, Isabel; Barroso, JoãoTechnology is present in almost all aspects of our modern lives, and technological advances have been more and more prevalent. One would expect this to facilitate everybody’s life, rendering common tasks more practical and easier to perform, but that is often not the case - at least not for the elderly. Older people have significant difficulties in using technological equipment due to the visual, physical, cognitive and hearing limitations associated with the natural aging process; these aspects must be taken into account if the intention is that of integrating technology in the lives of the elderly. In order to improve the quality of life of the elderly, as well as to prevent their social isolation, a mobile device application was developed to act as an intelligent remote control. This mobile application deals with data from two different platforms that were previously developed for improving the quality of life of the senior population: HbbTV and +Social. The features built into this virtual remote control include the integration with the +Social platform, as well as a speech recognition mechanism, and the possibility of making and receiving video calls with an integrated contacts list. A comprehensive study was carried out, focusing on recommendations and rules for graphical interfaces for the elderly, so as to allow equipping the application with adequate usability standards. The most relevant result was the definition of a list of guidelines used to steer the development of the interface. An investigation of mechanisms and technologies for enabling the implementation of the required functionalities was also carried out in order to define methodologies for freeing the user from the need of possessing any level of computer literacy. A series of usability tests was also performed to validate the viability of the remote control application. These tests allowed assessing the quality of the application, especially concerning the Graphical User Interface, as well as to receive feedback from potential end users. Based on the data collected during the test phase we conclude that this product is useful and that it responds to a current need.
- Y.S.Y.D. - You Stay You Demand: User-centered design approach for mobile hospitality applicationPublication . Esteves, Micaela; Pereira, AngelaThe evolution and widespread use of mobile technologies has boosted the hotel industry to develop applications for these devices. Several tourism applications and services for mobile devices have been developed in recent times. However, many of these services are not oriented for hotel guest, rather than these services are more focused on delivering information instead of targeting the specific needs of guests. Based on a study carried out in Portugal by the researchers, were found that the most mobile hotel applications and websites are focused on dreaming, planning and booking stages rather than in experiencing and sharing. Some of these mobile applications are reproduction of websites, which do not bring added value to the guests during their stay. Thus, it was developed the mobile hotel application, You Stay You Demand (Y.S.Y.D.), with a User-Centered Design approach that makes easier the communication between guests and hotel staff for guest satisfaction. During the study were integrated the Nielsen's heuristic evaluation with user testing to assess the usability which created a user-centered interface.
