- Collagen surface modified poly(ε-caprolactone) scaffolds with improved hydrophilicity and cell adhesion propertiesPublication . Sousa, Inês; Mendes, Ausenda; Pereira, Rúben F.; Bártolo, Paulo J.Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/collagen scaffolds were produced using a four-step procedure comprising (i) the fabrication of PCL scaffolds through an additive bioextrusion system, (ii) the PCL surface modification using a plasma treatment, (iii) the acrylic acid (AAc) grafting by ultraviolet (UV) polymerization, and (iv) the immobilization of collagen into the scaffold surface through the carbodiimide chemistry. This procedure allowed the quick fabrication of highly porous scaffolds with interconnected pores, well-defined internal architecture and improved cell adhesion properties. The immobilization of collagen into the PCL surface led to a significant enhancement in the hydrophilicity, while the biological tests showed a further improvement in the adhesion of fibroblast cells. These results indicate that the collagen surface modification is an effective strategy to render the hydrophobic nature of PCL and overcome the limited cell interaction of 3D PCL scaffolds.
- High-pressure range shock wave data for syntactic foamsPublication . Ribeiro, J.; Mendes, R.; Plaksin, I.; Campos, J.; Capela, Carlos; Elert, Mark; Furnish, Michael D.; Anderson, William W.; Proud, William G.; Butler, William T.Syntactic foams [SF] are a porous composite material resulting from the mixture of Hollow Glass Micro Spheres [HGMS] with a polymeric binder. Beyond a set of technological advantages over the polymer considered alone, SF present as an essential feature the possibility to control in wide limits the amount, the shape and the size of the pores and for that reason are being used for benchmarking in the area of shock wave [SW] behavior of porous materials. In this paper, SW loading experiments of SF samples were performed in order to assess the high-pressure range Hugoniot equation of state as a function of the SF initial density. Hugoniot data were assessed coupling the SW velocity within the SF samples with the SW velocity in a reference material or with manganin gauge results. The results obtained present a significant variation with the initial specific mass and can be described with appreciable precision by the Thouvenin/Hofmann Plate Gap model, while the concordance between the experimental results and the Gruüneisen model seems to be very dependent on the Gruüneisen coefficient values.
- The Importance of the Numerical Resolution of the Laplace Equation in the optimization of a Neuronal Stimulation TechniquePublication . Faria, PaulaFor the past few years, the potential of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for the treatment of several pathologies has been investigated. Knowledge of the current density distribution is an important factor in optimizing such applications of tDCS. For this goal, we used the finite element method to solve the Laplace equation in a spherical head model in order to investigate the three dimensional distribution of the current density and the variation of its intensity with depth using different electrodes montages: the traditional one with two sponge electrodes and new electrode montages: with sponge and EEG electrodes and with EEG electrodes varying the numbers of electrodes. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the mixed system which may allow the use of tDCS and EEG recording concomitantly and may help to optimize this neuronal stimulation technique. The numerical results were used in a promising application of tDCS in epilepsy.
- Influence of Superposition Length on Transverse Impact Response of Single-Strap Adhesive JointsPublication . Reis, P. N. B.; Ferreira, J. A. M.; Pereira, A. M.; Antunes, F. J. V.Adhesive joints are usually designed to carry in-plane loads, but in many cases they are also prone to transverse loading. On the other hand, the impact response of adhesive joints has received limited attention compared to quasi-static loading. Therefore, the present paper aims to study the influence of superposition length on transverse impact response of single-strap adhesive joints. For this purpose, low-velocity impact tests were performed using a drop weight-testing machine with a hemispherical impactor falling at the center of a bi-clamped specimen. The specimens were manufactured using Docol 1000 high-elastic limit steel, with 1.5 mm of thickness, and an Araldite® 420 A/B adhesive (Huntsman Advanced Materials, Everberg, Belgium). The collapse thresholds obtained were 61.6 J, 75.1 J, and 77.5 J, respectively, for adhesive joints with gap length of ℓo = 0, 10, and 20 mm. An adhesive fracture occurred for the three geometries and the cracks initiated at the corner of the joint where the deflection is higher. Joints with higher ℓo have higher impact energies, despite the lower bonding area, as consequence of the lower local deformation. A numerical study was developed and the zero gap (ℓo = 0) gives maximum peel stress.
- Multi-material NiTi-PEEK hybrid cellular structures by Selective Laser Melting and Hot Pressing: Tribological characterizationPublication . Costa, M. M.; Bartolomeu, F.; Palmeiro, J.; Guimarães, B.; Alves, N.; Miranda, G.; Silva, F. S.In this study, a multi-material NiTi-PEEK cellular structured solution was designed, produced and characterized targeting orthopedic applications. For that purpose, Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technique was used to produce NiTi cellular structures with different open-cell sizes and wall thicknesses. Hot Pressing (HP) technique was used to introduce PEEK in the open-cells of NiTi structures to obtain multi-material components. Morphological characterization showed that the selected SLM processing parameters were suited to achieve high-quality parts without significant defects. Tribological characterization proved an enhanced wear resistance to the multi-material specimens when compared with the mono-material NiTi structures. These multi-material structures are a promising solution for providing a customized stiffness and superior wear resistance to NiTi structures to be integrated in innovative orthopedic designs.
- Strain sequence effect on fatigue life and fracture surface topography of 7075-T651 aluminium alloyPublication . Macek, Wojciech; Branco, Ricardo; Costa, José Domingos; Pereira, CândidaThe paper studies the effect of strain-loading sequence on fatigue lifetime and fracture surface topographies in 7075-T651 aluminum alloy specimens. Fatigue tests were performed in two ways: (i) constant-amplitude loading and (ii) two series of variable amplitude loading with non-zero mean strain values. The topography of the fatigue fractures was measured over their entire surfaces with the help of an optical confocal measurement system. The results of fatigue tests in the form of equivalent strains, εaeq, such as the weighted mean of strain components, εa1, εa2, and fatigue life, Nf, were used as the sum of the partial number of cycles N1, and N2. This study indicates, inter alia, that the values of the fracture surface parameter core height Sk, found in the two-step loading program, are linearly dependent on the equivalent strain, and logarithmically dependent on the fatigue life.
