- Accessible software development: a conceptual model proposalPublication . This argument is something defended both by existing regulations, norms and standards, and also business organizations and governments. Despite this acknowledgement, the reality is still far from the desired equality. For certain groups of disabled or impaired citizens, such as the visually impaired, the existence of e-accessibility compliance represents an opportunity to integrate, in a more simple and straightforward manner, their societies. Despite the existing poor results on e-accessibility compliance, the mentioned citizens insist on using digital devices in their daily lives. Even though, in the last decade, multiple standards and regulations have been published towards indicating how to develop accessible digital user interfaces, there are still two major issues surrounding its implementation: the complexity and disparity of the documents containing the abovementioned norms, and also the lack of e-accessibility know-how by software experts. With this in mind, a proposal for an accessible software development model that encompasses e-accessibility incorporation as one of the development process activities has been presented. This model might represent a very interesting support tool for software development organizations and a novel resource for learning and training institutions to be able to improve their computer science and informatics students’ skills on e-accessibility.
- Artificial Intelligence-Driven User Interaction with Smart Homes: Architecture Proposal and Case StudyPublication . Lemos, João; Ramos, João; Gomes, Mário; Coelho, PauloThe evolution of Smart Grids enabled the deployment of intelligent and decentralized energy management solutions at the residential level. This work presents a comprehensive Smart Home architecture that integrates real-time energy monitoring, appliance-level consumption analysis, and environmental data acquisition using smart metering technologies and distributed IoT sensors. All collected data are structured into a scalable infrastructure that supports advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and machine learning, enabling predictive analysis, personalized energy recommendations, and natural language interaction. Proposed architecture is experimentally validated through a case study on a domestic refrigerator. Two series of tests were conducted. In the first phase, extreme usage scenarios were evaluated: one with intensive usage and another with highly restricted usage. In the second phase, normal usage scenarios were tested without AI feedback and with AI recommendations following them whenever possible. Under the extreme scenarios, AI-assisted interaction resulted in a reduction in daily energy consumption of about 81.4%. In the normal usage scenarios, AI assistance resulted in a reduction of around 13.6%. These results confirm that integrating AI-driven behavioral optimization within Smart Home environments significantly improves energy efficiency, reduces electrical stress, and promotes more sustainable energy usage.

- An EAI Based Integration Solution for Science and Research Outcomes Information ManagementPublication . The proposal is contextualized in terms of national and international science and research outcomes information management, corresponding supporting information systems and ecosystems. Information systems interoperability problems, approaches, technologies and tools are presented and applied to the research outcomes information management case. A business and technological perspective is provided, including the conceptual analysis and modelling, an integration solution based in a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) and the orchestration engine to execute the proposed solution. For illustrative purposes, the role and information system needs of a research unit is assumed as the representative case.

- INTU-AI: Digitalization of Police Interrogation Supported by Artificial IntelligencePublication . Garcia, José António; Grilo, Carlos; Domingues, Patrício; Miragaia, RolandoTraditional police interrogation processes remain largely time-consuming and reliant on substantial human effort for both analysis and documentation. Intuition Artificial Intelligence (INTU-AI) is a Windows application designed to digitalize the administrative workflow associated with police interrogations, while enhancing procedural efficiency through the integration of AI-driven emotion recognition models. The system employs a multimodal approach that captures and analyzes emotional states using three primary vectors: Facial Expression Recognition (FER), Speech Emotion Recognition (SER), and Text-based Emotion Analysis (TEA). This triangulated methodology aims to identify emotional inconsistencies and detect potential suppression or concealment of affective responses by interviewees. INTU-AI serves as a decision-support tool rather than a replacement for human judgment. By automating bureaucratic tasks, it allows investigators to focus on critical aspects of the interrogation process. The system was validated in practical training sessions with inspectors and with a 12-question questionnaire. The results indicate a strong acceptance of the system in terms of its usability, existing functionalities, practical utility of the program, user experience, and open-ended qualitative responses.
- Mobile AR: User Evaluation in a Cultural Heritage ContextPublication . Marto, Anabela; Gonçalves, Alexandrino José MarquesThe growing number of mobile augmented reality applications has been favoring its awarenessand usage among diversified areas. Focusing on cultural heritage applications, this study presents an evaluation of a mobile augmented reality application tested at Conimbriga, an archaeological site. The prototype developed for this purpose, named DinofelisAR, allowed users to view, over 360 degrees, a majestic reconstruction of a Forum from the Roman Era superimposed over its current ruins. Thus, users were able to keep perceiving the present-day surroundings of a Roman city in ruins while, at the same time, had the possibility to explore the matching virtual model. The results presented, arising from 90 participants involved in this evaluation, praise the sense of opportunity for new augmented reality solutions targeted at cultural heritage sites.
- Open Source para a Administração Pública: J2Gov - Joomla to governmentPublication . In a single platform, a tool to provide an interface for online services, presential services, document management and control and measurement times and performances. In this context, this project was developed as a way to meet the needs of public administration, regardless of their size, financial capacity or technical expertise of its human resources in the field of information technology.
- Planning the Deployment of Indoor Wireless Sensor Networks Through Multiobjective Evolutionary TechniquesPublication . Lanza-Gutierrez, Jose M.; Gomez-Pulido, Juan A.; Mendes, Silvio; M. Ferreira; Pereira, J. S.This work deals with how to efficiently deploy an indoor wireless sensor network, assuming a novel approach in which we try to leverage existing infrastructure. Thus, given a set of low-cost sensors, which can be plugged into the grid or powered by batteries, a collector node, and a building plan, including walls and plugs, the purpose is to deploy the sensors optimising three conflicting objectives: average coverage, average energy cost, and average reliability. Two MultiObjective (MO) genetic algorithms are assumed to solve this issue, NSGA-II and SPEA2. These metaheuristics are applied to solve the problem using a freely available data set. The results obtained are analysed considering two MO quality metrics: hypervolume and set coverage. After applying a statistical methodology widely accepted, we conclude that SPEA2 provides the best performance on average considering such data set.
- A Practical Solution for Automatic Service Discovery and Usage over Resource Poor Ad-hoc Sensor NetworksPublication . Costa, Nuno; Pereira, António; Serôdio, CarlosAd-hoc networks present new challenges due to its mobility, lack of infrastructure and resource limited devices. This means that service discovery (and usage) protocols targeted for traditional networks are not suitable for ad-hoc networks because they usually rely on the fixed and high availability characteristics of nodes to run important services. Ad-hoc networks need service discovery protocols compliant with its mobility and changing topology. In this paper we present a practical solution capable of provide automatic service discovery and usage over ad-hoc networks of resource poor sensor nodes. The solution was not developed from the ground-up. Instead, it was based on a (successfully) solution for traditional networks but then modified to address ad-hoc networks while keeping it original semantics.
