- The Impact of Geographical Factors on the Banking Sector in El SalvadorPublication . Hansen, Anders Lundvig; Lima Santos, LuísThis study explores how geographical factors shape El Salvador’s banking sector, particularly focusing on regional disparities, urbanization, and vulnerability to natural disasters affecting access to financial services. By employing a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative data and qualitative interviews, the research analyzes how these geographical challenges impact financial inclusion and banking development. Data from the Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador and financial institutions is examined alongside Geographic Information Systems (GISs) to illustrate the spatial distribution of banking services. Interviews with stakeholders, including bank representatives and clients from urban and rural areas, reveal a significant urban–rural divide, with approximately 75% of bank branches and 80% of ATMs situated in urban centers, particularly in San Salvador. Rural areas face limited access to formal banking due to challenging topography and inadequate infrastructure, leading to increased financial exclusion and reliance on informal systems. Natural disasters further disrupt banking infrastructure and heighten the need for emergency loans. While urbanization has spurred financial growth, it has also resulted in informal settlements with restricted access to formal services. As its main contribution, this study provides one of the first in-depth, geographically grounded analyses of financial exclusion in El Salvador, offering original insights into how spatial inequalities and disaster vulnerability intersect to shape banking access and economic participation. The study calls for a more inclusive banking sector, recommending mobile and digital banking expansion, agent banking in underserved areas, and improved disaster risk management to enhance economic participation across all regions.
- Enhancing Customer Experience Through IIoT-Driven Coopetition: A Service-Dominant Logic Approach in NetworksPublication . da Silva, Agostinho Antunes; Cardoso, Antonio J. MarquesBackground: In an increasingly digitized supply chain landscape, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face mounting challenges in regard to delivering differentiated and responsive customer experiences. This study investigates the role of Industrial Internet of Things-enabled coopetition networks (IIoT-CNs) in enhancing the customer experience and value cocreation among SMEs. Grounded in Service-Dominant Logic, this research explores how interfirm collaboration and real-time data integration influence key performance indicators (KPIs), including perceived product quality, delivery timeliness, packaging standards, and product performance. Methods: An experimental design involving SMEs in Portugal’s ornamental stone sector contrasts traditional operations with digitally integrated coopetition practices. Results: While individual KPI improvements were not statistically significant, regression analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between IIoT-CN participation and the overall customer experience. The reduced variance in the performance metrics further suggests increased consistency and reliability across the network. Conclusions: These findings highlight IIoT-CNs as a promising model for SME digital transformation, contingent on trust, interoperability, and collaborative governance. This study contributes empirical evidence and practical insights for advancing customer-centric innovation in SME-dominated supply chains.
- GUIA ACESSÍVEL PARA A COMUNICAÇÃO DE JOVENS EM CONTEXTO PRISIONALPublication .
- Loss and Grief Among Bereaved Family Members During COVID-19 in Brazil: A Grounded Theory AnalysisPublication . Lima, Paola Kallyanna Guarneri Carvalho de; Laranjeira, Carlos; Carreira, Lígia; Baldissera, Vanessa Denardi Antoniassi; Meireles, Viviani Camboin; Baccon, Wanessa Cristina; Dias, Lashayane Eohanne; Ali, Amira Mohammed; Mello, Fernanda Fontes; Tostes, Maria Fernanda do Prado; Salci, Maria AparecidaThe COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in countless losses around the world, profoundly affecting the lives of many people, especially those who faced the death of family members, bringing several negative repercussions to these families and constraining the experience of grief. This study aimed to understand the experience of loss and grief among bereaved individuals who lost family members during the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative study was guided by Charmaz’s constructivist grounded theory as a methodological framework. The study adhered to the Criteria for REporting Qualitative research (COREQ) checklist. Data collection took place between May and November 2023 through telephone interviews that were audio-recorded and later transcribed in full. The purposive sample consisted of 21 bereaved family members who had lost their loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were mainly female (n = 16) with a mean age of 55.5 (SD = 16.2). The loss of their family members occurred 12 to 24 months before data collection. The following central phenomenon was identified through the analytical process: “Family experience of loss and grief: between the unspoken goodbye and post-loss adjustment”. This was anchored in the following three categories: (1) Anguish and fear of the unknown; (2) Death by COVID-19—communication of death and lack of goodbyes; and (3) (Re)construction of meaning—support networks and the grieving process. Our findings recommend that policymakers allocate additional resources to grief support services to better prepare for future pandemic events. Furthermore, it is necessary to invest in the implementation of relevant training programs for healthcare professionals, with a family centered approach.
- Toward Integrative Biomechanical Models of Osteochondral Tissues: A Multilayered PerspectivePublication . Filipe Ramos Cardoso da Silva, Bruna; Marco Domingos; Amado, Sandra; Dias, Juliana; Pascoal-Faria, Paula; Ana C. Maurício; Alves, NunoUnderstanding the complex mechanical behavior of osteochondral tissues in silico is essential for improving experimental models and advancing research in joint health and degeneration. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the constitutive models currently used to represent the different layers of the osteochondral region, from articular cartilage to subchondral bone, including intermediate regions such as the tidemark and the calcified cartilage layer. Each layer exhibits unique structural and mechanical properties, necessitating a layer-specific modeling approach. Through critical comparison of existing mathematical models, the viscoelastic model is suggested as a pragmatic starting point for modeling articular cartilage zones, the tidemark, and the calcified cartilage layer, as it captures essential time-dependent behaviors such as creep and stress relaxation while ensuring computational efficiency for initial coupling studies. On the other hand, a linear elastic model was identified as an optimal starting point for both the subchondral bone plate and the subchondral trabecular bone, reflecting their dense and stiff nature, and providing a coherent framework for early-stage multilayer integration. This layered modeling approach enables the development of physiologically coherent and computationally efficient representations of osteochondral region modeling. Furthermore, by establishing a layer-specific modeling approach, this review paves the way for modular in silico simulations through the coupling of computational models. Such an integrative framework supports scaffold design, in vitro experimentation, preclinical validation, and the mechanobiological exploration of osteochondral degeneration and repair. These efforts are essential for deepening our understanding of tissue responses under both physiological and pathological conditions. Ultimately, this work provides a robust theoretical foundation for future in silico and in vitro studies aimed at advancing osteochondral tissue regeneration strategies.
