- Additive Manufacturing Tools to Improve the Performance of Chromatographic ApproachesPublication . Valente, J. F. A.; Sousa, F.; Alves, N.Chromatography is widely applied industrially. However, some limitations are associated with its common supports, and the impossibility to fully control their structural features is particularly restrictive. Additive manufacturing (AM) is emerging as a fast, highly precise, and reproducible technology for producing chromatographic supports that can improve its performance.

- The effect of International Logistics, Free Trade Agreements and Distance on International Trade, the case of PanamaPublication . Gavilanes, Juan Carlos Albarracin; Santos, João Neves de Carvalho; Machado, Luís MiguelThis study aims to determine the effect of International Logistics, Free Trade Agreements and Distance on International Trade in Panama. In terms of Distance I decided to include three dimensions, Geographical, Cultural and Institutional Distance in order to define the effect of each dimension on International Trade. Moreover, Panama was chosen since the importance of Latin American countries on International Trade has been recognized. However, countries from this region tends to present totally different behaviours. Further, this country has proved to be an open economy promoting International Trade. Nevertheless, within the literature still remains a lack of studies addressing Latin American countries. Thus, this study aims to help filling that void in the literature. Additionally, I focused on one specific country to obtain more precise results related to the country. Gravity model is the framework I used to develop the hypotheses, since it has been well-recognized, acknowledged and widely used in the literature. The hypotheses were tested using a sample covering Panama and 85 trade partners in specific years from 2007 to 2018. Data were taken from official secondary sources resulting in 510 observations and were analysed using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) linear regression. The results of this study confirm the positive effect that International Logistics and FTAs have on International Trade, also the negative effect of Geographical Distance was confirmed. However, no effect was found for Cultural Distance and regarding Institutional Distance a positive effect was found, contrary to the literature. Thus, this study contributes to the literature by empirically testing that for Panama as Latin American country, the improvement of Logistics and liberalization of trade due to FTAs have a positive impact. Moreover, the different behaviours on International Trade were also corroborated since Panama tend to trade most with far countries and highly different in terms of Institutions, stressing the importance of study individually countries from this region and also Distance dimensions.
- Effect of Exercise Training on Quality of Life after Colorectal and Lung Cancer Surgery: A Meta-AnalysisPublication . Machado, Pedro; Pimenta, Sara; Oliveiros, Bárbara; Ferreira, José Pedro; Martins, Raul A.; Cruz, JoanaSurgical treatment affects health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and increases fatigue symptoms in patients with lung cancer (LC) and colorectal cancer (CRC). We aimed to systematically review the effect of exercise training on HRQoL and fatigue after LC and CRC surgery. Randomized controlled trials published before 21 March 2021, were searched in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus and PEDro. Eligible trials compared the effect of exercise interventions initiated preoperatively or in the first 3 months after surgery versus usual care on postoperative HRQoL and fatigue. Standardized mean differences (SMD) were pooled using random-effects models. Twelve studies with a total of 777 patients were included. In LC patients (10 studies, n = 651), exercise training in general led to a moderate improvement in the physical domain of HRQoL (0.68: 95% CI: [0.47; 0.89]) and a small reduction in fatigue levels after surgery (SMD = 0.28: 95% CI: [0.02; 0.53]), while no effects were found in other HRQoL domains. In CRC (two studies, n = 126), exercise training showed no effects on HRQoL and fatigue after surgery. Exercise training is an effective intervention to improve physical function and fatigue after LC surgery. Further studies are necessary to clarify the effects of exercise on HRQoL and fatigue after CRC surgery.
- Product development in custom-made medical devicesPublication . Ramos, Victor Quintana; Correia, Mário António Simões; Almeida, Henrique de AmorimThe 21st century presents a revolution in additive manufacturing, and these technologies will continue to grow. Osteobionix S.L., the company where the internship took place, has been designing and producing titanium prosthetic parts for human implantation since 2008. The company’s goal is to design and build parts of the human body tailored for patients in which standard prostheses do not solve the problem. Based on this, the company’s methodology was to obtain 3D images of each case, discuss, design and build a final solution. As soon as the solution is accepted by the surgeon, it proceeds to the production phase, mainly using an electron beam fusion machine (ARCAM S12). The objective in the internship time was to understand the company’s workflow, help in the production line and develop some design cases in order to learn and analyze what is a complete design follow-up case. The main results obtained are the prototypes that are manufactured in EBM. Licensing for human use and implantation of products in humans is a slow process. Animal testing should be the next step to obtain useful data. Finally, several cases developed during the internship will be presented and explained.

- Seasonal nutritional profile of Gelidium corneum (Rhodophyta, Gelidiaceae) from the center of PortugalPublication . Cavaco, Mário; Duarte, Adriana; Freitas, Marta; Afonso, Clélia; Bernardino, Susana M.; Pereira, Leonel; Martins, Mendelson; Mouga, TeresaGelidium corneum is a well-known agarophyte, harvested worldwide for its high agar quality. However, the species also exhibits an interesting nutritional profile, but with seasonal variations. Therefore, to evaluate the nutritional value of G. corneum, ash, crude protein, total lipids, and carbohydrates were analyzed at different times of the year. The heavy metals mercury, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and tin, as well as iodine were also measured. Finally, the seasonal antioxidant capacity of G. corneum extracts was evaluated. Our results indicate that the biomass is rich in protein (up to 16.25 ± 0.33%) and carbohydrates (up to 39.5 ± 3.29%), and low in lipids (up to 2.75 ± 0.28%), and especially in the summer, the AI, TI indexes, n-6/n-3 and h/H ratios (0.93, 0.6, 0.88 and 1.08, respectively) are very interesting. None of the contaminants exceeded the legally established limits, and the iodine values were adequate for a healthy diet. Finally, the antioxidant capacity is fair, with the DPPH ≤ 10.89 ± 1.46%, and ABTS ≤ 13.90 ± 1.54% inhibition, FRAP ≤ 0.91 ± 0.22 AAE.g−1, and TPC ≤ 6.82 ± 0.26 GAE.g−1. The results show that G. corneum is an attractive resource, with potential use as food or as a food supplement.
