- Consumer LED lamp with ODAC technology for high-speed visible light communicationsPublication . Figueiredo, Mónica; Ribeiro, Carlos; Dobesch, Ales; Alves, Luís N.; Wilfert, OtakarOptical digital-to-analog converters (ODACs) were recently proposed to mitigate the non-linear characteristic of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and to simplify the transceiver in optical wireless communication systems. This paper describes the implementation and performance of an ODAC lamp built with commercial phosphor coated LEDs. It is shown to have sufficient performance to cope with data-rates compatible with those recommended for Ultra HD quality internet download speed (25Mbps), despite the very low bandwidth of these LEDs. Also, the structure of a low-cost and high-speed OFDM-based Visible Light Communication transceiver, based on commercial LEDs and off-the-shelf components, is presented. This solution does not require D/A conversion or complex LED driving circuitry in the transmitter, which are usually seen as limiting factors to the deployment of high-speed VLC systems in the consumer LED lighting market.
- In situ crosslinked electrospun gelatin nanofibers for skin regenerationPublication . Dias, J. R.; Baptista-Silva, S.; Oliveira, C. M. T. de; Sousa, A.; Oliveira, A. L.; Bártolo, P. J.; Granja, P. L.Due to its intrinsic similarity to the extracellular matrix, gelatin electrospun nanofibrous meshes are promising scaffold structures for wound dressings and tissue engineering applications. However, gelatin is water soluble and presents poor mechanical properties, which generally constitute relevant limitations to its applicability. In this work, gelatin was in situ crosslinked with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDGE) at different concentrations (2, 4 and 6 wt%) and incubation time-points (24, 48 and 72 h) at 37 °C. The physico-chemical and biological properties of BDDGE-crosslinked electrospun gelatin meshes were investigated. Results show that by changing the BDDGE concentration it is possible to produce nanofibers crosslinked in situ with well-defined morphology and modulate fiber size and mechanical properties. Crosslinked gelatin meshes show no toxicity towards fibroblasts, stimulating their adhesion, proliferation and synthesis of new extracellular matrix, thereby indicating the potential of this strategy for skin tissue engineering.
- Adaptive learning for dynamic environments: A comparative approachPublication . Costa, Joana; Silva, Catarina; Antunes, Mário; Ribeiro, BernardeteNowadays most learning problems demand adaptive solutions. Current challenges include temporal data streams, drift and non-stationary scenarios, often with text data, whether in social networks or in business systems. Various efforts have been pursued in machine learning settings to learn in such environments, specially because of their non-trivial nature, since changes occur between the distribution data used to define the model and the current environment. In this work we present the Drift Adaptive Retain Knowledge (DARK) framework to tackle adaptive learning in dynamic environments based on recent and retained knowledge. DARK handles an ensemble of multiple Support Vector Machine (SVM) models that are dynamically weighted and have distinct training window sizes. A comparative study with benchmark solutions in the field, namely the Learn++.NSE algorithm, is also presented. Experimental results revealed that DARK outperforms Learn++.NSE with two different base classifiers, an SVM and a Classification and Regression Tree (CART).
- Evaluating physical activity in dementia: a systematic review of outcomes to inform the development of a core outcome setPublication . Gonçalves, Ana-Carolina; Cruz, Joana; Marques, Alda; Demain, Sara; Samuel, DineshBackground: Physical activity is recommended for people living with dementia, but evidence for the positive effects of physical activity is limited by the use of heterogeneous outcomes and measurement tools. This systematic literature review aimed to summarise previously reported outcomes and identify the measurement tools used most frequently in physical activity interventions for people with dementia. Methods: Literature searches were conducted in April 2015, on Delphis and Medline. Qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies reporting on any type of physical activity, in any setting, across types of dementia, stages of disease progression and published from 2005 onwards were included. A content analysis approach was used to report on the frequency of reported outcomes and measurement tools. Results: The 130 included studies reported on 133 different outcome domains and 267 different measurement tools. “Functional abilities and independence” (n=69), “Global cognitive function” (n=65), “Balance” (n=43), “Global behavioural symptoms of dementia” (n=42) and “Health related quality of life” (n=40) were the most frequently reported outcome domains. “Enjoyment” was the outcome most frequently sought by patients and carers. Conclusion: The need for the development and implementation of a Core Outcome Set has been reinforced. Ahead of the completion of the Core Outcome Set, researchers and clinicians are advised to measure the impact of physical activity interventions on these frequently reported outcome domains.
- Fundamental Solution of the Multi-Dimensional Time Fractional Telegraph EquationPublication . Ferreira, Milton; Rodrigues, M. Manuela; Vieira, NelsonIn this paper we study the fundamental solution (FS) of the multidimensional time-fractional telegraph equation where the time-fractional derivatives of orders α ∈]0,1] and β ∈]1,2] are in the Caputo sense. Using the Fourier transform we obtain an integral representation of the FS in the Fourier domain expressed in terms of a multivariate Mittag-Leffler function. The Fourier inversion leads to a double Mellin-Barnes type integral representation and consequently to a H-function of two variables. An explicit series representation of the FS, depending on the parity of the dimension, is also obtained. As an application, we study a telegraph process with Brownian time. Finally, we present some moments of integer order of the FS, and some plots of the FS for some particular values of the dimension and of the fractional parameters α and β.
- Randomized controlled trial on mouth rinse and flossing efficacy on interproximal gingivitis and dental plaquePublication . Luís, H.S.; Luís, L.S.; Bernardo, M.; Santos, N.R. dosObjective The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of an essential oils mouth rinse and dental floss on dental plaque accumulation and gingivitis in interproximal areas. Methods With informed consent, a parallel randomized controlled clinical trial was developed with 60 third-year dental hygiene students, randomly divided into two non-blind groups of 30 individuals each. For a period of 2 weeks, one group used an essential oils mouth rinse, according to manufacturer's instructions, and the other group flossed twice a day. Both groups received a toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste for home dental hygiene care. A baseline dental hygiene appointment consisted of tooth scaling, prophylaxis and collection of the study data, using the Lobene modified gingival index; Saxton & Ouderaa gingival bleeding index and the Quigley & Hein modified by Turesky dental plaque index. Results At baseline, there was no significant difference between the groups for interproximal gingival inflammation (P = .214), gingival bleeding (P = .829) and dental plaque accumulation (P = .860). After 2 weeks of treatment, no significant differences were found between the essential oils mouth rinse and dental flossing for reduction of interproximal gingival inflammation (P = .938) and bleeding (P = .307). Essential oils mouth rinse showed to be significantly better than dental flossing in reducing interproximal dental plaque accumulation (P = .006). Conclusion The use of an essential oils mouth rinse may be advised, as a complement, for patients unable to floss effectively, as it is more effective in reducing interproximal dental plaque accumulation than dental floss.
