- Desafios para a intervenção pedagógica com a expressão plásticaPublication . Magueta, LúciaNeste artigo procuro salientar o valor pedagógico da vivência da expressão plástica, numa perspetiva de construção de conhecimento, de realização de experiências no «fazer» expressivo e criativo, na apreciação da obra de arte e na reflexão sobre o que se pensa e sente. Atualmente, que desafios se colocam à intervenção pedagógica em experiências de expressão e educação plástica? Para responder a esta questão partirei de alguns resultados de trabalhos de investigação que realizei, nomeadamente, (1) um estudo sobre o desenvolvimento do currículo de Expressão e Educação Plástica no 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico; e (2) um estudo sobre as conceções de professores em início de formação sobre a "expressão Plástica" e a forma de a operacionalizar em contextos de educação. A reflexão em torno das conclusões obtidas permitiu identificar aspetos a considerar nas práticas de educadores e professores de crianças nos primeiros anos ou de outros profissionais que desenvolvem experiências com a linguagem plástica em espaços educativos diversos.
- Avaliação de Modelos Numéricos com Elementos de Fibra Recorrendo a Ensaios em Mesa SísmicaPublication . Sousa, Romain; Correia, António A.; Almeida, João P.; Pinho, RuiO comportamento sísmico de estruturas de betão armado envolve uma série de fenómenos físicos que, em última análise, são impossíveis de modelar exaustivamente. No presente estudo, a resposta de três estruturas porticadas submetidas a ensaios dinâmicos em mesas sísmicas foi comparada com resultados de análises numéricas considerando diferentes opções de modelação. A interpretação dos resultados associados a cada um dos modelos considerados permite avaliar a importância relativa de cada solução, bem como fornecer indicações relativas ao desenvolvimento de simulações numéricas optimizadas. As conclusões fornecem indicações para engenheiros e investigadores desenvolverem análises não-lineares mais fiáveis com elementos de fibra.
- Abuse and maltreatment in the elderlyPublication . Martins, Rosa; Neto, Maria João; Andrade, Ana; Albuquerque, CarlosIntroduction The aging population is increasing worldwide, but the abuse and mistreatment in the elderly (often silenced forms) has also been increasing, with strong implications for their quality of life. Objective To identify forms of abuse and ill-treatment in the elderly, as well as the determinants of these abuses. Methodology This is a quantitative study, of the non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional type attended by 135 Portuguese elderly. It uses the Family APGAR Scale and the Question to Elicit Elder Abuse (QEEA), which was applied between January and June 2013, in the elderly residing in the central of Portugal. Results The data shows that 23.5% of the elderly have suffered some kind of abuse, these being especially of the emotional kind and neglect. We also found that the most abused elders were unmarried and widows, those who had lower academic qualifications, those who reported feeling lonely and less healthy and even those who perceive to integrate families with some degree of dysfunction. Conclusion We found that the abuse and mistreatment are present in the everyday life of many seniors and are a difficult subject to approach. The evidence, invite us to reflect on the development of intervention strategies, particularly at the levels of emotional abuse, neglect, promotion of health and family functioning in order to contribute to the reduction or extinction of abuse and ill-treatment in the elderly.
- Metabolic and histopathological alterations in the marine bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis induced by chronic exposure to acrylamidePublication . Larguinho, Miguel; Cordeiro, Ana; Diniz, Mário S.; Costa, Pedro M.; Baptista, Pedro V.Although the neurotoxic and genotoxic potential of acrylamide has been established in freshwater fish, the full breadth of the toxicological consequences induced by this xenobiotic has not yet been disclosed, particularly in aquatic invertebrates. To assess the effects of acrylamide on a bivalve model, the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis), two different setups were accomplished: 1) acute exposure to several concentrations of waterborne acrylamide to determine lethality thresholds of the substance and 2) chronic exposure to more reduced acrylamide concentrations to survey phases I and II metabolic endpoints and to perform a whole-body screening for histopathological alterations. Acute toxicity was low (LC50≈400mg/L). However, mussels were responsive to prolonged exposure to chronic concentrations of waterborne acrylamide (1-10mg/L), yielding a significant increase in lipid peroxidation plus EROD and GST activities. Still, total anti-oxidant capacity was not exceeded. In addition, no neurotoxic effects could be determined through acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity. The findings suggest aryl-hydrocarbon receptor (Ahr)-dependent responses in mussels exposed to acrylamide, although reduced comparatively to vertebrates. No significant histological damage was found in digestive gland or gills but female gonads endured severe necrosis and oocyte atresia. Altogether, the results indicate that acrylamide may induce gonadotoxicity in mussels, although the subject should benefit from further research. Altogether, the findings suggest that the risk of acrylamide to aquatic animals, especially molluscs, may be underestimated.
- Tethered Swimming Can Be Used to Evaluate Force Contribution for Short-Distance Swimming PerformancePublication . Tethered swimming can be used to evaluate force contribution for short-distance swimming performance. J Strength Cond Res 28(11): 3093-3099, 2014-The purpose of this study was two-fold: (a) to compare stroke and the physiological responses between maximal tethered and free front crawl swimming and (b) to evaluate the contribution of force exertion for swimming performance over short distances. A total of 34 male swimmers, representing various levels of competitive performance, participated in this study. Each participant was tested in both a 30-second maximal tethered swimming test and a 50-m free swimming test. The tethered force parameters, the swimming speed, stroke (stroke rate [SR]), and the physiological responses (increase in blood lactate concentration [ΔBLa], heart rate, and rate of perceived exertion) were recorded and calculated. The results showed no differences in stroke and the physiological responses between tethered and free swimming, with a high level of agreement for the SR and DBLa. A strong correlation was obtained between the maximum impulse of force per stroke and the speed (r = 0.91; p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that the maximum impulse and SR in the tethered condition explained 84% of the free swimming performance. The relationship between the swimming speed and maximum force tended to be nonlinear, whereas linear relationships were observed with the maximum impulse. This study demonstrates that tethered swimming does not significantly alter stroke and the physiological responses compared with free swimming, and that the maximum impulse per stroke should be used to evaluate the balance between force and the ability to effectively apply force during sprint swimming. Consequently, coaches can rely on tethered forces to identify strength deficits and improve swimming performance over short distances.
- Design Procedures of Reinforced Concrete Framed Buildings in Nepal and its Impact on Seismic SafetyPublication . Chaulagain, Hemchandra; Rodrigues, Hugo; Spacone, Enrico; Varum, HumbertoThe present paper analyses the design procedure and its impact on seismic safety of the structures. For this, a representative reinforced concrete frame building (WDS) is designed and the results are compared with similar buildings detailed with: i) Current Construction Practices (CCP); ii) the Nepal Building Code (NBC) and iii) the Modified Nepal Building Code (NBC+) recommendations. The seismic performance evaluation is done with global strength, inter-storey drift and displacement of the structures. Likewise, the sensitivity of the structural and geometrical parameters of the RC frame building is studied through nonlinear analysis. The study parameters considered for parametric analysis are column size, beam size, inter-storey height, bay length, bay width, and compressive strength of concrete. The results show that the influence on the structural behaviour, particularly by variation in column size and inter-storey height. Additionally, the influence of the seismic zone factor on reinforcement demand of the structure is studied. The result shows that structures designed for high to medium seismic hazard demands double the reinforcement in beams compared to structures in low seismic zone.
- Two-dimensional transmitarray beamsteering using stacked tunable metamaterialsPublication . Reis, João; Al-Daher, Zaid; Copner, Nigel; Hammoudeh, Akram; Caldeirinha, Rafael; Fernandes, TelmoA new 2D-beamsteering antenna technique using an electronically controlled transmitarray is presented in this paper. When coupled to a conventional horn or an array patch antenna, the proposed transmitarray has the ability to steer the main lobe of the original antenna radiation pattern in both elevation and azimuth planes, with ranges up to 30° and 30°, respectively. The transmitarray is implemented using varactor-diode controlled unit-cells with bandpass filtering characteristics around 5.35GHz. Electromagnetic simulations are presented to prove the concept.
- Passive phase conjugating array using FR4Publication . Gomes, Rodolfo; Paraíso, Pedro; Fernandes, Telmo; Caldeirinha, RafaelThis paper presents the development and construction of a low-cost passive phase conjugating array (PCA) antenna aiming the mitigation of multipath phenomena at 6 GHz. The implementation of the proposed array was performed on woven fiber glass substrate using both discrete and integrated circuits. Measurement results, obtained inside an anechoic chamber, from a 16-element PCA antenna under multipath conditions are used to validate its feasibility for vehicular applications where beam steering is required. Tests performed in the chamber yield to an average gain of 9 dB across a 120° angular range and peak gains of 32 dB. The relative good performance of the proposed PCA topology clearly demonstrates its benefit in mitigating multipath fading and, consequently, fade margin reduction.
- A square loop frequency selective surface parametric study for EC model optimisationPublication . Ferreira, David; Cuiñas, Iñigo; Caldeirinha, Rafael F. S.; Fernandes, Telmo; Reis, JoãoThis paper presents results of an extensive parametric study, based on Electromagnetic simulation, for square loop type frequency selective surfaces (FSS). Consideration was given to the physical attributes of the FSS, such as the loop dimensions and spacing, substrate thickness and dielectric properties, for several frequencies and plane wave incident angles. Correlation analysis and evaluation of input parameters on the FSS performance were performed, yielding to a refinement of the corresponding commonly used equivalent circuit (EC) model. The latter, allows for better estimates of the frequency response of such (canonical) FSS structures. A correction factor for the classical formulation is proposed, in which prediction errors are significantly reduced from 18% to 6% in presented cases. A 6GHz in-house fabricated FSS prototype is also measured in an anechoic chamber, with results being in good agreement to the simulations.
