- Stationarity in moment closure and quasi-stationarity of the SIS modelPublication . Martins, José; Alberto Pinto; Nico StollenwerkPrevious epidemiological studies on SIS model have only considered the dynamic evolution of the mean value and the variance of the infected individuals. In this paper, through cumulant neglection, we use the dynamic equations of all the moments of infected individuals to develop a recursive method to compute the equilibria manifold of the moment closure ODE’s. Specifically, we use the stable equilibria of the moment closure ODE’s to obtain good approximations of the quasi-stationary states of the SIS model. This is a crucial step when the quasi-stationary distribution is highly skewed.
- Solving large-scale SONET network design problems using bee-inspired algorithmsPublication . Bernardino, Eugénia Moreira; Bernardino, Anabela Moreira; Sánchez-Pérez, Juan Manuel; Gómez-Pulido, Juan Antonio; Vega-Rodríguez, Miguel AngelIn the past years, the number of users of Internet-based applications has exponentially increased and consequently the request for transmission capacity or bandwidth has significantly augmented. When managed properly, the ring networks are uniquely suited to deliver a large amount of bandwidth in a reliable and inexpensive way. In this paper, we consider two problems that arise in the design of optical telecommunication networks, namely the SONET Ring Assignment Problem (SRAP) and the Intraring Synchronous Optical Network Design Problem (IDP), known to be NP-hard. In SRAP, the objective is to minimise the number of rings (i.e., DXCs). In IDP, the objective is to minimise the number of ADMs. Both problems are subject to a ring capacity constraint. To solve these problems, we propose two bee-inspired algorithms: Hybrid Artificial Bee Colony and Hybrid Bees Algorithm. We hybridise the basic form of these algorithms with local search, in order to refine newly constructed solutions. We also perform comparisons with other algorithms from the literature and use larger instances. The simulation results verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithms.
- Analyzing the evidence of an IPR take-off in China and IndiaPublication . Godinho, Manuel Mira; Ferreira, VítorBoth China and India have been experiencing a historical take-off in the use of intellectual property rights (IPR). In terms of trademark applications filed with domestic IP offices in 2009, the evidence demonstrates that China now ranks 1st worldwide and India 5th, while for patent filings China ranks 3rd worldwide and India ranks 9th. This performance is remarkable as both China and India experienced negligible demand for IPR protection as recently as two decades ago. The IPR take up trends in these two countries are analyzed in detail, highlighting the structure of patent and trademark demand since 1990. Specifically, the available series are broken down and analyzed according to: (i) national versus foreign origin of patents and trademarks; (ii) technological (IPC) and trademark (NICE) classes; and (iii) the major individual patent users in each country. The data used refers to applications in the Chinese and Indian IP offices although the demand from residents of these two countries in both the international and other national systems is also assessed. Beyond the existing momentum in IPR registrations by China and India and their capacity to maintain it into the near future, the paper addresses practical questions about the strategies, motives and benefits behind the current trends. In particular, we seek to evaluate the capacity of both China’s and India’s National Innovation Systems to internalize the potential returns of this increasing demand for IPR. The insight reached finds that should both China and India sustain their current IPR growth rates, they will be able to catch up with the most advanced economies within the time span of a few decades.
- Optimism predicting employees' creativity: The mediating role of positive affect and the positivity ratioPublication . Rego, Arménio; Sousa, Filipa; Marques, Carla; Pina e Cunha, MiguelWe examine how optimism predicts creativity both directly and through the mediating role of positive affect and the positivity ratio (the ratio between the frequency of positive and negative affective states). Five hundred and ninety five employees reported their positive and negative affect, as well as their optimism. Their creativity was reported by supervisors. The main findings are the following: (1) optimism predicts creativity both directly and through the mediating role of positive affect and the positivity ratio; (2) the relationship between the positivity ratio and creativity is curvilinear, in such a way that an "excessive" ratio is detrimental to creativity. The findings stress the relevance of optimism both for individuals and organizations, and suggest that examining positivity ratios is fruitful in the creativity domain, as it has been in other domains, and that negative affect should not be viewed simply as an obstacle when studying employees' creativity.

Mitchell, Geoffrey R.; Domingos, M.; Bártolo, Paulo J.Polymers have a major contribution to make in the field of regenerative medicine in order to develop and deploy biological substitutes that restore, maintain, or improve tissue function. There are realistic opportunities to create tissues using an engineered extracellular matrix or scaffold and biologically active molecules. A number of different approaches to preparing scaffolds have been explored and the requirements for materials and personalization identified. We review the methodologies and materials available and report on recent work at the CDRSP to integrate and provide control of the processes to provide a realistic biomanufacturing process.
