- Population-Based Cancer Screening analysis in Northern Portugal Using Process MiningPublication . Monteiro, Hugo; Oliveira, Mariana; Martinho, Ricardo; Reis, João; Tavares, Fernando; Felgueiras, Óscar; Martins, CarlosBackground This study focuses on the Colorectal Cancer Screening Program in Northern Portugal, aiming to evaluate the disruption effects on its performance and efficiency. Methods We conducted an observational analyses of 271 637 administrative records from 2020 to 2022. Administrative timestamps were converted into a step-by-step dataset of screening activities (an “event log”) and analysed using process mining and comparative performance analysis across time periods and ACeS (primary care administrative clusters). Results Consultation‑to‑colonoscopy time lengthened by 53 %, rising from a median 58 days (IQR 29–92) in early 2020 to 89 days (IQR 53–127) in 2021, before improving to 73 days in 2022. Conversely, referral‑to‑consultation time fell from 110 days to 26 days (−76 %), reflecting targeted backlog clearance. Screening volumes declined in 2020 but recovered above baseline levels by 2022. Performance differences across primary care administrative clusters were significant (p < 0.001), with some units outperforming regional median transition times. Early adoption of automated electronic referrals and flexible consultation scheduling may have contributed to improved programme performance during the recovery period following pandemic-related disruptions. Substantial heterogeneity across units was observed for key transitions, indicating uneven disruption and recovery patterns across administrative units. Conclusion Process Mining techniques revealed critical vulnerabilities in the screening program during the initial stages of the period in analysis (matching the pandemic). These findings support targeted monitoring and prioritisation of operational improvements to reduce avoidable delays and strengthen continuity of population-based screening. Policy summary Policies aimed at strengthening healthcare service continuity and operational capacity benefit from analytical methods like process mining. Key recommendations include standardizing workflows, enhancing coordination between primary care and hospital services, and investing in digital monitoring systems to mitigate disruptions and ensure continuity in cancer screening programs during periods of system stress.
- A Statistical Analysis of Companies' Financing Strategies in Portugal during the COVID-19 PandemicPublication . Tavares, Fernando; Santos, E.; Vasconcelos, Mafalda Venâncio de; Tavares, Vasco CapelaThis study aims to establish which sources of financing were used and the relevance of different banking products for Portuguese companies during the pandemic. We also intend to understand the determinants of companies’ financing options and what lies behind their decisions concerning the appropriate level of debt. A quantitative methodology was used, based on a ques tionnaire given to Portuguese companies to analyse different financing issues. The sample was composed of 1957 companies with a business volume of more than EUR 500,000 per year. The results show that Portuguese companies focused on managing liquidity and corporate risk. We found evidence that companies kept financing themselves by banking products such as in the pre-pandemic period, although 29.6% resorted to the LAE-COVID economy support line. Companies decide on the appropriate amount of debt based on the nature of the business, the phase of the life cycle in which the company is, the cash flows’ volatility, accounting results, credit rating, and fiscal benefits. Academicians and companies should master the concept of company financing and adopt strategies to consider the level of debt and refine the banking products to be used. Although the literature on business financial management usually claims that all crises are the same, the COVID-19 pandemic not only caused a recession but also forced people and companies to adapt to a new environment. Portuguese companies have shown resilience and focus on their adoption of good financing practices.
- The Influence of Affects on Workaholism in Teleworking During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Partial Least Squares ModelPublication . Santos, E.; Diogo, Ana; Gomes, Patrícia; Tavares, FernandoHuman beings need to feel affects and to work, so it is important to balance personal and professional life. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, workers that are unable to disconnect from work and respect rest and leisure hours while teleworking can become workaholics. The present study aims to analyze the levels of workaholism and to study the influence of affects on workaholism in the teleworking context. A quantitative methodology was used, based on data obtained from 365 Portuguese workers who responded to a questionnaire survey that analyzes workaholism levels in workers who were teleworking from home, their affects and some sociodemographic variables. In general, being involved in telecommuting increases levels of workaholism. The results of the application of the structural equation modeling with partial least squares revealed that affects influence workaholism. In teleworking practice, the influence of affects on the workaholism condition is very important and can provide organizational managers with information to help those employees become more productive. On the other hand, it is important to ensure a balance in the use of time between teleworking and everyday life. This study contributes to the scientific knowledge in the teleworking field more specifically, for the relationship between workaholism and the affects when telecommuting. This study is also important for organizations and workers to define strategies to maintain a balance between affects and work.
- The Value of Farmland and Its Determinants - The Current State of the ArtPublication . Tavares, Vasco Capela; Tavares, Fernando; Santos, E.This article aims to perform a literature review on the topic of farmland valuation, covering the determinants of farmland value and the models that are used to price land. To do so, recent literature on the topic was combined with classical and well-known papers. All the factors considered in these papers to explain farmland prices and/or to model them were retrieved, presented, and compared. Then, the main models proposed in the literature are presented and their suitability and goals are explained. This study can help academics as it gives an overview of the current state of the art, summarizes the main factors proposed by researchers to explain farmland prices, and sheds light on new lines of research. Besides that, it is also relevant for policymakers because farmland valuation and its use have implications on society and on urban planning, which is a hot topic under discussion.
