- Algae-Based Leather Alternatives: Valorising Gelidium corneum residues for textilesPublication . Silva, Catarina Bandeirinha da; Mouga , Teresa Margarida Lopes da Silva; Fernandes, Isabel Maria Rodrigues Barreto; Marques , José Miguel MouraThe growing demand for sustainable solutions in the textile and fashion industries has accelerated the search for alternatives to conventional leather. This dissertation reports the development of a leather-like textile coating derived from industrial residues of the red macroalga Gelidium corneum, a by-product of the agar extraction industry. The experimental work involved biomass preparation, formulation of bio-based coating pastes, and application via knife coating onto cotton fabric. The resulting materials exhibited high abrasion resistance (50,000 cycles), wash fastness (4–5), and light fastness (3–4), with colour intensification after repeated laundering. Additional trials incorporating 13% and 15% residue confirmed the feasibility of increasing bio-based content. Economic analysis indicated competitive costs compared to sustainable alternatives such as Piñatex® and AppleSkin™, particularly under industrial optimisation. Two fashion accessory prototypes were developed, demonstrating the material’s aesthetic and functional potential. This research highlights the valorisation of marine residues as a pathway to sustainable textile innovation, fostering synergies between the textile and marine sectors.
