- Application of Multi-Criteria Analysis for Selecting Solvents in Plastic RecyclingPublication . Ochoa, Harold Alexander Saigua; Oliveira, Nelson Simões; Heleno, Maria Lizete LopesOne of the emerging technologies with the greatest potential in plastic recycling is selective dissolution precipitation (SDP). This technique enables the recovery of polymer materials with near-virgin quality. However, the selection of appropriate solvents remains a critical challenge and a key opportunity for improving process efficiency and applicability. In this study, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was applied as a multi criteria decision-making tool for solvent evaluation. The parameters considered were solubility, hazard level, and cost. Solubility was assessed using Hansen Solubility Parameters, hazard was evaluated using GHS H-codes, and cost data were obtained from vendor quotations and commercial sources. The results identified the most suitable solvents for each polymer: ethyl benzoate (S17) for polystyrene (P1), p-cymene (S5) for polyethylene (P2), cumene (S18) for polypropylene (P3), anisole (S1) for polyethylene terephthalate (P4), and dimethyl isosorbide (S6) for polyvinyl chloride (P5). Overall, this work provides a structured and practical framework for solvent selection in SDP. The proposed approach supports safer and more sustainable recycling practices and contributes to the advancement and potential industrial implementation of selective dissolution technologies, contributing to the advancement and potential industrial implementation of selective dissolution technologies.
