- Design for a More Human School: Improving the Educational Climate of Students with Depressive SymptomatologyPublication . Monteiro, Marco António Fernandes Veiga; Pernencar, Cláudia Alexandra da Cunha; Frontini, Roberta Caçador; Mindrico, Tiago Miguel Montês PereiraUniversity students regularly experience depressive symptomatology due to academic, social and environmental challenges. These factors have an impact on their well-being and also in the academic performance and sense of belonging within the educational community. This study aims to explore how Human-Centered Design (HCD) and Co-Design methodologies are contributions to the improvement of the educational climate for students that face these symptoms. Through a practice-based action research approach, this study combines qualitative methods, including interviews with psychologists and students, shadowing observations and collaborative workshops with students. The findings of this study show relevant challenges related to the social, physical, and psychological dimensions of the learning environment, emphasizing the need for interventions with students' participation. A Design for Social Change Framework is proposed, including Design Thinking methodologies with the Social Change Model, to foster a more inclusive and supportive educational experience for the students. By involving the school community in the design process, this research aims to promote mental well-being, intensify academic engagement, and create sustainable strategies for a healthier learning environment.
