Effect of the flyer material on the interface phenomena in aluminium and copper explosive welds
Publication . Carvalho, G.H.S.F.L.; Mendes, R.; Leal, R. M.; Galvão, I.; Loureiro, A.
The effect of physical and mechanical properties of three different flyers on the interface phenomena of partially overlapped explosive welds, using the same base plate material, was studied. Flyers of Copper Cu-DHP and aluminium alloy 6082 (tempers T6 and O) were welded to AA6082-T6 base plates. The morphology of the weld interface is strongly influenced by the physical and mechanical properties of the flyer. In the interface of the aluminiumwelds, the use of a flyer of lower hardness and yield strength than the base plate results in asymmetrical waves, with bigger amplitude and smaller wavelength than the weld series of similar temper, and higher mechanical properties. The copper-aluminium welds presented flat interfaces, mainly because of the significant differences inmelting temperature and density between the copper flyer and the aluminiumbase plate. Considering these results and analysing several dissimilar welds carried out by other authors itwas found thatwhen the product of density and melting temperature ratios between the flyer and the base plate exceeds a certain value, there is no formation of waves at the interface of the metals. Furthermore, for the Cu-Al welds, the CuAl2 (θ) intermetallic phase was formed on the bond zone.
Introducing Exploratory Teaching in Preservice Teacher Education Through Lesson Study
Publication . Duarte, Nicole; Ponte, João Pedro da; Faria, Filipa
In exploratory teaching, the pupils learn from their work on tasks that aim to introduce new concepts, procedures, representations and mathematical ideas. Lesson study, with its focus on teachers’ collaborative and reflective work around issues of pupil learning, is a powerful formative process that may be used in preservice teacher education, sustaining an exploratory teaching approach. In this article, we present a lesson study experience in preservice teacher education, addressing the case of a preservice teacher who is preparing to teach in grades 1–6. Our aim is to identify what key aspects of knowledge of teaching practice does the preservice teacher use when preparing and leading an exploratory lesson during her participation in a lesson study. Our methodology is qualitative, with data collected from the lesson study sessions and the collection of documents produced during the lesson study work, and the data are analysed using a model that presents the key aspects of knowledge of teaching practice. The results show that the structure and the activities carried out in the lesson study, such as designing the lesson, selecting the task and anticipating questions to be posed to pupils, promoted the use of the preservice teacher’s didactic knowledge regarding the phases of an exploratory lesson.

The Spanish and Portuguese Systems: Two Examples Calling for a Further Reform – Uncovering the Architecture Underlying the New Consumer ADR/ODR European Framework
Publication . Marques Cebola, Cátia Sofia; Fernando Esteban De La Rosa
The article scrutinizes the European Framework for consumer ADR and ODR with the purpose of uncovering how Europe aims to develop ADR and ODR in EU MS in order to deliver justice and ensure a better enforcement of EU consumer protection rules and a better functioning of the markets. It deepens on the transformations in the ADR systems required to better fulfil the new functions assumed by the certified ADR entities and the role that the technology may play inside efficient certified consumer ADR entities. The domestic implementation of EU law in Spain and Portugal rather seems to perpetuate the pre-existing systems although wrapped up in European packaging with a ribbon on top. The exam reveals the existence of a further path for improvement and for obtaining additional advantages that could lead to a better functioning of the markets and a more suitable encompass with the philosophy that underlies the EU Regulatory Framework. The article explores different ways to move forward and achieve a higher degree of compliance with the ADR/ODR Regulatory Framework
A finite element method to study multimaterial wind towers
Publication . Pascoal-Faria, P.; Dias, C.; Oliveira, M; Alves, N.
Wind towers are used to produce electrical energy from the wind. A significant number of towers is manufactured using tubular separately steel or concrete, having limitations such as maximum diameter and height imposed essentially by transportation limitations. Developed computational studies on structural design of towers have been mainly focused on a single material. This investigation aims to develop a finite element method able to study structural design of wind towers combining different materials. The finite element model combines solid and shell elements encompassing different geometries. Several case studies are considered to validate the proposed method and accurate results are obtained.
