Abstract(s)
A mould factory specialized in textures, located in the city of Marinha Grande
in Portugal, controls its job procedures using paper documents that need to be
handwritten. This way of working is problematic because very often documents
are lost and damaged, miscommunication occurs, and data gets outdated without
notice. Also, when an information is needed, a person needs to spend time searching
for the documentation, or talking to the persons involved in the job to gather any
data.
To better control the production line, to properly manage information and to
assess production performance, a new software system is proposed. This system
aims to monitor all steps of production of a mould, from its reception to its
delivery. All the persons involved in the job need to have access to a common
information gateway, where it makes possible for information to be united in one
single intelligible spot. Some part of paper documentation is still needed, such as the
state taxes, transportation notes, etc. Any other paper documentation is expected
to be abandoned, since the software will archive every aspect of the business within
the company’s database.
A software system was proposed using an architecture that combines the 3-tier
layered architecture with micro-services. This architecture linked all the computer
assets involved in the workflow of the business: its Network Shared Files Directory,
its DBMS, its corporate e-mail account. Also, a User Interface is proposed to allow
the proper access for three different profile of users:
• Technician Workers, that execute the transformation jobs in the moulds;
• Production Managers, people responsible for managing the production line
and dealing with costumers, quality, and workflow organization;
• IT developers, that develop and maintain the software system.
The system proposed consisted of a User Interface with the capability of being
accessible from any type of device within the company’s intranet network, thus
allowing the use of smartphones, tablets and computers to interface with the
software. In the company servers, an application was deployed to be responsible
for managing the data interchange and also intercommunication between different
network assets and to maintain the company business in form of software rules.
This application is the one responsible for keeping and maintaining the enterprise
logic and workflow. Finally, all the relevant information is stored properly within
the company on-premises DBMS for further processing and analysis.
