- Adaptation to the international business environment: a resource advantage perspectivePublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Li, Dan; Serra, Fernando Antonio RibeiroThis paper discusses the importance of the adaptation of the firm to the International Business Environment. Using concepts from the literature on resource advantage, we posit that the firms' adaptation capability to different International Business Environments is a valuable, difficult to imitate, non-tradeable, rare but not scarce and path dependent resource. We further suggest that adaptation to International Business Environment is a non-substitutable core source of competitive advantage for the multinational enterprises, developed over time through the firms experiences and built into their routines. In line with this argument, some propositions are formulated. We conclude with a broad discussion and suggesting some avenues for future research\.
- A bibliometric study of John Dunning’s contribution to international business researchPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Pinto, Cláudia Sofia Frias; Serra, Fernando Antonio Ribeiro; Santos, João CarvalhoThis article offers a review of John Dunning’s contribution to international business (IB) research, so as to assess the impact of Dunning and of the Eclectic paradigm on this discipline. The contribution of Dunning and of the Eclectic paradigm – usually referred to as OLI – are a core reference to current international business research, namely for studying location decisions, foreign investment, entry modes and internationalization, and for the multinational enterprise theory. First, we review the conceptual foundations of Dunning’s academic contribution. Second, methodologically, we carry out a bibliometric study of articles published in 14 respected academic business magazines over a period of 31 years, between 1980 and 2010. A sample of 697 published articles that refer to Dunning’s work supports the analysis of citations and co-citations matrixes and of relevant themes, allowing us to verify the influence of Dunning’s work on the international business and Management disciplines. This study allowed us to identify the network of connections between Dunning’s Eclectic paradigm and a variety of international business theories, concepts and authors, as well as with the main subjects studied in the discipline. We observed the connections to the transaction costs theory, resource-based view, industrial organization and evolutionary theory. This study also contributes to scholars’ better understanding of the development of the discipline and of the structure of knowledge within connections between theories and authors. Through their contributions, scholars such as John Dunning leave their imprint on the way in which disciplines and knowledge evolve. Dunning’s work, in the Eclectic paradigm, systematized three conditions that guide the internationalization of companies – and is now a reference for entrepreneurial activities, scholars and research.
- Culture and Hofstede (1980) in international business studies: a bibliometric study in top management journalsPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Serra, Fernando Antonio Ribeiro; Pinto, Cláudia Sofia FriasHow countries differ in their fundamental cultural traits and how these differences impact firms and businesses has been a recurring topic in international business research. Geert Hofstede’s (1980) work on culture and the cultural dimensions has had high impact on research carried out in international business studies and has been used in a wider array of business/management disciplines to delve into a large variety of phenomena. In this study, we conduct a bibliometric analysis of the articles published in eight top ranked business journals that quoted Hofstede’s work, over a period of thirty years. Hofstede’s work is used as a key marker for culture. In a sample of 655 articles, we conducted citation and co-citation analyses to better understand the ties binding scholars, theories and ideas. Moreover, a longitudinal analysis of both cocitation and research topics allow us to observe and better understand how much does Hofstede – and culture – matter in international business studies and how research emphasis has changed over time. For instance, we noted how the emphasis of research has shifted from methodological concerns to help explaining, contextualizing why firms made the choices they did, and how operations ought to be managed. We discuss broadly the results, pointing some implications, especially for theory and scholars.
- Doing bibliometric reviews for the Iberoamerican Journal of Strategic ManagementPublication . Serra, Fernando Antonio Ribeiro; Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Guerrazzi, Luiz Antonio de Camargo; Scaciotta, Vanessa VasconcelosThe editorial comments published in the Iberoamerican Journal of Strategic Management are intended to help researchers and students to improve their articles. These editorial comments include content and suggestions about writing, publishing and reviewing articles, as well as methodological issues. In this new editorial comment, we will present our views on bibliometric studies. Bibliometric studies are sometimes marginalized, but in our view, as in any other study, the problems are equivalent to a study that is not done properly.
- Foreign entry modes under institutional pressures: the impact of strategic resource seeking and market seeking strategiesPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Serra, Fernando Antonio RibeiroMultinational corporations (MNCs) are subject to the various dimensions of the external institutional environments. Institutional theory suggests that MNCs need to conform to the prevailing rules, norms and procedures of the locations where they operate in order to survive and grow. This means that MNCs need to develop the best possible configuration of strategy-structure for their worldwide operations. Previous research has noted that in these conditions firms may simply seek to follow a referent other. However, MNCs’ specific strategy for a focal foreign operation is likely to determine the entry mode for each host country. In certain circumstances it may be whether MNCs are pursuing a market-seeking strategy or a strategic resource seeking strategy that shapes the entry mode in face of the prevailing institutional pressures. We contribute to the understanding of entry modes into foreign markets as a reflection of a strategic choice that is bound by institutional constraints.
- The importance of the reviewer's role in the development of innovation research: Guidelines for constructive contributionsPublication . Serra, Fernando Antonio Ribeiro; Scafuto, Isabel Cristina; Nassif, Vânia Maria Jorge; Costa, Priscila Rezende da; Ferreira, Manuel PortugalIntroduction The peer review process is essential to ensure the quality, rigor, and relevance of scientific publications. The International Journal of Innovation (IJI), a journal dedicated to disseminating research on innovation with an emphasis on emerging markets, values the thorough and constructive contributions of its reviewers. These professionals play a crucial role in the selection and improvement of published research, directly contributing to the journal’s scientific excellence. This editorial commentary addresses the role of reviewers within the specific context of the IJI, offering practical guidance especially aimed at early-career researchers and doctoral students who are beginning to engage in the manuscript evaluation process. More than merely judging submitted works, the reviewer acts as a strategic partner to authors, providing constructive recommendations that strengthen the methodological and theoretical quality of the research under review. Recognizing the importance of this role means understanding the direct influence that reviewers have on the advancement of validated scientific knowledge. Well-conducted reviews elevate the quality of published articles and contribute to the academic career development of the reviewers themselves.
- Mergers and Acquisitions: Does Hiring Financial Advisors Make a Difference?Publication . Oliveira, Leandro Rodrigues de; Serra, Fernando Antonio Ribeiro; Ferreira, Manuel Anibal Silva Portugal Vasconcelos; Guerrazzi, Luiz Antonio de CamargoThis study conducts a meta-analysis to address inconsistencies and fragmented understanding regarding the role of financial advisors in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). We aim to quantitatively synthesize existing empirical evidence to clarify the deter- minants influencing the engagement of financial advisors and, critically, how their characteristics and transaction contexts im- pact the operational and financial outcomes of M&A deals. Through a systematic literature review and meta-analytic approach, we analyzed 65 empirical studies (articles, theses, and dissertations) to identify and classify variables explaining the selection and influence of financial advisors on M&A performance. Our analysis specifically correlated independent variables measuring financial advisor attributes (e.g., experience, competence, and reputation) with dependent variables reflecting operational per- formance (transaction completion time) and financial performance (e.g., CAR, SCAR, ROA, ROE, and EBITDA). The findings indicate that the ability to foster positive operational (shorter completion times) and financial outcomes is a primary driver for engaging financial advisors in M&A. Financial advisors demonstrably contribute to more efficient deal closures, higher financial returns, and reduced completion times. The meta-analysis reveals significant moderating effects of financial advisor reputation and M&A complexity (proxied by size) on the relationship between advisor engagement and M&A performance, explaining heterogeneity in prior research. This study significantly advances M&A literature by providing a robust, quantitative synthesis that moves beyond prior inconclusive findings. We demonstrate that financial advisors are critical in navigating M&A complex- ities, and their effectiveness is contingent upon their reputation and the transaction's inherent complexity. By elucidating these moderating roles, our meta-analysis offers a clearer, more nuanced understanding of when and how financial advisors make a difference, thereby informing both academic theory and practical decision-making in M&A strategy.
